Explorers of the North. Wreck Bay.
❄️⚓️ 🏔️ 🧊

Sailing in from Longyearbyen, the water looks like liquid ice, and through the mist, Skansbukta slowly emerges - often simply known as Wreck Bay.

It’s one of the most incredible and mysterious places in all of Svalbard. Rising above the shore is the massive, silent Skansen cliff, looking much like the ruins of a medieval fortress. But what immediately catches your eye lies right by the water's edge. Resting on the pebbled beach is an old, rusting wooden cutter. It was abandoned here in the 1930s when a small gypsum mine was shut down. All around, you can still find deserted mining carts and a wooden trapper's cabin. The abandoned settlement and the stranded boat look as if time simply stopped in its tracks. The Arctic doesn't erase history - it freezes and preserves it.

Standing on this desolate shore in absolute silence, broken only by the sound of waves and circling sea birds, you feel the raw power of nature and just how fleeting human presence truly is. Absolutely surreal!

On the Trappers' Trail. Harald’s Cabin.

Harald of Svalbard is Harald Soleim — a legend of the Norwegian Arctic, as well as the most famous and one of the last traditional trappers (hunters) to live on the Svalbard archipelago. He lived without electricity, running water, or modern amenities, supporting himself by hunting. He earned the title of a local legend — in winter he was a complete solitary, while in summer his cabin became a gathering place where he hosted everyone from the Queen of Norway to KGB agents and scientists.

His extraordinary life was described in Birger Amundsen's popular non-fiction book titled "Harald: Forty Years on Spitsbergen".

We've just experienced the first sunset on Spitsbergen after a polar day that lasted over four months. In less than three months, the polar night will begin, bringing total darkness beyond the Arctic Circle, occasionally illuminated by the northern lights.

The last run of the season on Spitsbergen.
That’s how we wrapped up the ski touring season with Joinus. We can’t wait for more lines in the Arctic!

Our first "Northern Explorers" ski expedition is now behind us.
⛵⛷🏔
In May, we managed to reach the northernmost fjords of Svalbard and, despite the fickle weather, ski down a few interesting lines. We are already starting to plan our next ski challenges for the coming season. Stay tuned!

On this cruise, we weren't entirely sure where we'd sail in Greenland. Our priority was clear skies during the total solar eclipse. It turned out that Scoresby Sund was the best option! The Amdrup route is still ahead of us!
