✨ Themes: Food ✨

LISTEN. Everything tastes better here. Every meal on its own is a reason to live, or at least a reason to take this trip all by itself. Slovak halušky, Hungarian paprika chicken, and Austrian spätzle are some of my favourites. Fresh grilled fish, fried or grilled cheese, goulash, and the tastiest fruits and vegetables are also available. And don't even get me started on the pastries; I'll go on for days. In my past visits, I've found some favourite places for all these (and so much more!) that I'm excited to share with you!

✨ Themes: Architecture ✨
I come back from my trips with so many pictures of buildings! The organization of spaces and structures has always fascinated me, and an aesthetic streetscape or building design is something I can't get enough of. Vienna, Budapest, Košice, and Bratislava showcase a stunning architectural timeline, where the soaring spires of Gothic cathedrals stand alongside the dramatic, gilded facades of the Baroque era. This historic backdrop is seamlessly woven with the whimsical, organic lines of Secessionist and Art Nouveau masterpieces, creating a vibrant contrast against sleek contemporary designs. Walking through these cities feels like stepping through an open-air museum where centuries of design traditions fluidly collide and coexist.

✨ Themes: The Danube River ✨

The Danube is the second-longest river in Europe. It runs through ten European countries and four capital cities. It has been historically significant for millennia, linking the various people groups along it - and others from further away - for commerce and competition.

Our trip will take us to three of these capitals! The Danube most accessible in Budapest and Bratislava, where the historic centres of these cities sit right on its banks. We'll have time to walk along the river as we explore its place in the lives and histories of the locals. You might find a restaurant along the banks and enjoy a local delicacy. We'll also experience the river on an evening cruise in Budapest, and from the UFO Tower observation deck in Bratislava!

I knew when I was 16 that I didn't want to travel the way I saw people traveling - cramming as many places as they can into their trips.

You might check a lot of boxes and get a lot of photos, but you never feel settled. You're living out of your suitcase and rushing around, spending half your time in the car, or in trains or taxis or worse - buses. You never absorb the vibe and get to know the places. By the time you remember how to get back to your hotel, you're packing up to leave again.

I've learned recently about the 72-hour rule.

Don't spend less than 3 nights in one place.

Why?

Your vacation should be a break from your busy life, even if you're exploring somewhere new.

Day 1 - Arrive. Start to figure out where you are in space. Find someplace to eat. See a bit.

Day 2 - Your neighbourhood is more familiar. You take time for your coffee in the morning, and for your drink in the afternoon. You see a bit more, and you have time to do things carefully. And you're not already packing up to leave in the morning.

Day 3 - You are relaxed. You know how the place feels. You have a favourite coffee shop. You can see some more, and connect it to what you've been experiencing for the last couple of days.

Now you've actually been there. You haven't just passed through, looking at the surface. You've enjoyed it more completely and it's become part of you.

This is why I organize Muckle Plum Journeys the way I do. "Couldn't you make it a two-week trip?" No!* Part of the experience I want you to have is that of slowing down and getting to know these wonderful places. I could rush you through them, but I want you to have time to have a conversation rather than just a handshake. You'll collect experiences you'll remember, not just photos.

*Two-week versions of the trip are available, but you still won't spend less than three nights anywhere.

It's just everywhere; you literally can't avoid it. There will be a few gallery visits included in your trip, and more available as options, but you'll find it without even trying on every corner. Whether it's painting or sculpture, galleries or gardens, sacred or profane, ancient or modern, we will find a stunning wealth of works to take in. You might even find a piece of permanent wearable art to take home with you! 😉
