The recent appointment of Sierra Leoneโs President, Julius Maada Bio, as the new ECOWAS Chairman has sparked serious concern and disbelief across West Africa. How can a man who has failed to lead his own country effectively, and whose record is stained with undemocratic practices, now be trusted to lead a regional body representing over a dozen nations?
Maada Bioโs background is troubling. A former junta leader, he came to power in the 1990s by overthrowing his own boss. Today, he presides over a government many Sierra Leoneans view as authoritarian and disconnected from the people's needs. His regime, led by the Sierra Leone Peopleโs Party (SLPP), has brought more hardship than hope.
During his campaign, Maada Bio promised economic relief. He criticized the price of a bag of rice, then at Le250,000 (about $10 USD), claiming it was too high. Yet under his leadership, the price has skyrocketed to over Le1,000,000 (about $50 USD)โa 300% increase that has left many families struggling. The national currency has also suffered dramatically. Where Le500,000 once equaled $100 USD under the previous government, today the same $100 costs Le2,500,000โa devastating inflation reflecting poor economic management.
Even more alarming are reports of human rights violations, including the killing of unarmed civilians and the imprisonment of political opponents without due process. Many political prisoners remain behind bars, casting serious doubts on his commitment to democracy and justice.
Sierra Leone has also faced territorial challenges. Ten villages have reportedly been taken over by Guineaโs junta government, yet Maada Bioโs administration has been silent. This perceived weakness undermines confidence not only in his national leadership but also in his ability to represent West Africa effectively.
Adding fuel to the fire is the controversy surrounding Sierra Leoneโs recent elections. June 2023 presidential election was reportedly won by Dr. Samura Kamara, but widespread accusations of rigging, allegedly involving the Electoral Commission chairman Dr. Mohamed Konneh, cast a shadow over the legitimacy of the current government.
So the question remains: Can a man who allegedly stole his own country's election truly champion democracy in the region? Can he be trusted to convince military juntas to return power to civilian governments when his own legitimacy is in question?
This is why many countries in West Africans have begun questioning the future of ECOWAS. When leadership is compromised, the entire institution suffers. ECOWAS was founded to promote democracy, cooperation, and peaceโnot to provide refuge for leaders undermining those very values.
The people of Sierra Leone deserve better. West Africa deserves better. And ECOWAS deserves a chairman who leads by exampleโnot by hypocrisy.
How can Julius Maada Bio โ a man who once came to power through a junta โ now become the Chairman of ECOWAS?
Did African leaders elect him by mistake, or was it because of money (bribe) paid behind closed doors?
How can someone who stole an election in Sierra Leone and continues to suppress the voice of the people now represent West Africa?
Is this the kind of leadership ECOWAS stands for?
We must speak up. We must question. Africa deserves better!
