🌿 Meet the False Chameleon! 🌿

Say hello to Polychrus marmoratus, also known as the many-colored bush anole or monkey lizard 🦎—a slow-moving, color-shifting marvel of the rainforest!

📍 Found in the lush forests of Suriname, this fascinating reptile isn’t a “true” chameleon, but it sure knows how to put on a colorful show!

Fun Facts:
• Can subtly change color for camouflage
• Uses its long tail for balance in trees
• Moves slowly and deliberately like a monkey (hence the nickname!)
• Excellent climber and completely arboreal
• Not dangerous—just beautifully bizarre!

Why it matters:
The false chameleon plays an important role in keeping insect populations in check and is a key indicator of a healthy, balanced ecosystem. Its presence means nature is thriving!

Meet the Dendrobates Tinctorius!

Also known as the dyeing poison dart frog, this tiny amphibian is a burst of color in the lush rainforests of Suriname. With its electric blue, yellow, or black markings, it’s not just a pretty face — it’s toxic too! But don’t worry — admire, don’t touch.

Why “dyeing”?
Indigenous peoples once used the frog’s skin to dye parrot feathers in a ritual called tapirage — a vibrant blend of culture and nature.

Black-tailed Trogon

A stunning forest resident, the Black-tailed Trogon is a treat for any birder’s eyes
Male: Shimmering emerald green with a bold white chest band and bright red belly
Female: Subtle beauty with a gray head and chest

Look for its dark gray tail and listen for its slow, low “coop… coop…” calls echoing through the rainforest canopy.

Found mostly in the Amazon basin — from eastern Panama to northern South America — and yes, right here in Suriname!

Don’t confuse it with the Slaty-tailed Trogon — that one has a red bill and no white chest band.
