National Museum of Syria

Syria really was part of the cradle of civilisation. As such, a visit to
the National Museum west down the main Sharia Shoukri al-Quwatli is
well worth while for history buffs, and will help you contextualise the
ancient sites you visit in the country. The ticket office is on the road
itself, allowing access to a well-watered statue-dotted garden. Entry to
the museum itself is via the castelline main entrance – the main gate
of a 7th century desert palace recreated here, looking like a chess
piece with its chunky towers. The most famous exhibits are off to the
left, with finds from the classical eras – primarily Palmyra and Dura
Europus on the Euphrates.

The Gateway to the Old City

Your first introduction to the Old City of Damascus will probably be
via the underpass crossing Sharia ash-Thawra. This brings to the very
western end of the Souq al-Hamidiyya. This is a fitting introduction to
the souqs of Damascus – and quite different from the other souks you
will find crammed higgledy-piggledy into the wall-girt old city. This
route is wide and well-paved, the sedate store fronts of long-standing
mercantile concerns to either side, spruced up in the 19th century,
stand an orderly two stories tall. A further sense of height and
airiness is provided by the lofty arching ceiling overhead, the girders
resembling those of a belle epoque French train station. Narrow pencils
of light spear down upon the crowds below.

The Valley of the Tombs

Moving on from Diocletian’s camp and beyond Zenobia’s walls that mark
the border of the city of Palmyra, you will soon find yourself in an
eerie valley, completely empty except for the large stone tombs that
inhabit the sides of the mountains. This is the Valley of the Tombs, the
ancient burial site of the Palmyrenes, where the various wealthy
families of Palmyra would build these large tower mausoleums to provide a
final resting place for their dead. While some of the more elaborate
tombs require special permission to visit, a walk through the Valley is
still well worth your time for the brief insight into how the Palmyrenes
dealt with their dead.

The Palmyra Museum

The Palmyra Museum is not a particularly large or well-planned museum,
but it is a must-see in Palmyra merely for the fantastic pieces of
Palmyrene art and statuary that are contained within. While many of the
finer pieces have been moved to Damascus, Aleppo, or Europe, there are
still some great pieces, particularly funerary busts, that will give you
a good introduction into Palmyrene art.Although Palmyra was a Roman
city, being that it was part of the Roman Empire, it always maintained a
distinct identity. Latin was never really used as a language and locals
relied on Greek and Aramaic instead, and the city’s place on the border
with Persia meant that there was a lot of Persian influence in its art.

Aleppo Citadel (The)

Overhead views of Aleppo reveal one distinguishing feature amidst the dun huddle of buildings that comprises the city today. The remarkable Citadel really is a double-take experience. You certainly cannot miss it. At the eastern end of the old city a 30m wide dry moat surrounds a huge oval mount. The 50m tall steeply sloping walls are faced with limestone blocks, making the entire construct look artificial. However, this towering island is a natural outcrop. Remains of a sanctuary to the Semitic sky god Hadad, only recently discovered, date use of the site to the middle of the third millenium BC. It formed the acropolis of the fledgling city under the Assyrians, Persians, Seleucids and Romans.
