From time to time Elegant Euphonias appear in the tropical deciduous forest around Alamos. These colorful littles birds are typically found at higher elevation in pine-oak forest eating mistletoe berries. The Alamos region is the northern distribution on the Pacific Coast of this species. Bird watchers have observed that during spring time Elegant Euphonia move down to the tropical deciduous forest to feed on mistletoe. Despite the drought of the last 3 years, mistletoe had a good year fruiting during the fall and winter of 2024-25. Phainopeplas which usually are rare were also common around Alamos eating berries especially in mesquite trees. This spring Elegant Euphonia has been showing in different areas around Alamos feeding in mistletoes. According to eBird, this number of observations hasn't been reported since 2010.

September can be a challenging month to birdwatch in Alamos, Sonora. The heat and humidity from the summer monsoon remain high, with temperatures still around 100F. Steamy lenses and sweaty clothes will be the norm when you are out in the field. And it is buggy.

Enduring all these discomforts will have its reward. Since mid-August the first Neotropical migrants start showing up, like Rufous Hummingbird. By September, these migrants – especially the flycatchers, warblers and buntings – will enrich the avian biodiversity by adding their numbers to the still present Tropical species that came to the region to breed during the summer (for example, Rose-throated Becard, Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher, Cinnamon-bellied Saltator, and Blue-black Grassquit).

In September, the Tropical Dry Forest is lush with impenetrable green covering the hills. At the end of the rainy season, you may get to enjoy the spectacular summer storms with their lightning and thunder that will bring the much-desired rains to refresh your evenings in Alamos.
