Indonesia’s Wildfires in 2026
When Smoke Changes the Way We Travel
When we think of Indonesia, the images that usually come to mind are blue seas, Bali, beautiful villas surrounded by nature, volcanoes, or charming old towns with their own unique character.
But these days, if you look at Indonesia from satellite imagery, the picture is somewhat different.
Large plumes of smoke are hanging over parts of the country.
Indonesia is currently dealing with forest fires and agricultural fires, collectively known as Karhutla, with significant areas affected across Sumatra and Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo.
And what makes this particularly interesting for travelers isn't just the fire itself.
It's what comes after it.
Smoke, air quality, and an environmental problem that doesn't stop at national borders.
-----------------------------
Fires That Don't Just Burn on the Surface
One of the major challenges Indonesia faces is peatland fires.
Peatlands are ecosystems containing large amounts of accumulated organic material. Under normal conditions, they tend to retain significant amounts of moisture. But when weather becomes dry and rainfall decreases, these areas can dry out and become highly vulnerable to fire.
The more troublesome part is that peat fires don't necessarily produce large, visible flames.
They can smolder beneath the surface, spreading through layers of organic material underground. This makes them considerably more difficult to control and extinguish than an ordinary surface fire.
It is also one reason why a situation can continue even when the number of visible hotspots appears to have declined.
-----------------------------
Why Is the Situation So Concerning Right Now?
One important factor is dry weather and below-normal rainfall.
As moisture levels fall, forests, agricultural areas, and peatlands become increasingly vulnerable to fire.
Satellite monitoring by NASA has shown large smoke plumes from fires across parts of Borneo, with imagery in mid-September still showing smoke from areas where fires remain active.
But blaming everything on heat and dry weather would only tell part of the story.
Indonesia's wildfire problem is also connected to land management, the use of fire in land preparation, and changes in land use.
When these factors meet a particularly dry season, a problem that has occurred periodically for years can quickly grow into something much larger.
-----------------------------
So, What Does This Have to Do with Traveling in Indonesia?
More than you might think.
But that doesn't mean “Indonesia is on fire” or that the entire country is affected.
Indonesia is a vast archipelago. A wildfire situation in Kalimantan or parts of Sumatra does not automatically mean that every destination, from Bali to other islands, is experiencing the same conditions.
For travelers, the answer isn't necessarily to cancel the trip immediately.
It's to check the actual conditions at your destination.
Pay attention to:
Air quality
Weather and wind conditions
Local fire conditions
Flight status and visibility
Updates from local authorities
Because sometimes the thing that changes your travel plans isn't heavy rain or a volcanic eruption.
It might simply be smoke that makes it difficult to see anything at all.
-----------------------------
When a Beautiful View Becomes a Hazy Sky
The most visible consequence of wildfires is, of course, smoke and haze.
In several parts of Indonesia, air quality has deteriorated significantly, affecting large numbers of people and contributing to respiratory problems.
Some areas have moved classes online to reduce children's exposure to polluted air.
Heavy haze can also disrupt travel, particularly aviation, as visibility can drop dramatically.
For travelers, this might mean something relatively simple, such as changing an outdoor itinerary.
For people who live there, however, it can mean living with unhealthy air for days or even weeks.
That difference is worth remembering.
What a traveler calls “bad weather” may be a serious health and quality-of-life issue for the people who live there.
-----------------------------
And Smoke Doesn't Recognize Borders
This is another reason why Indonesia's wildfires matter beyond Indonesia itself.
Smoke can travel with the wind, crossing from Indonesia into neighboring countries.
Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore therefore keep a close eye on developments.
Cross-border haze is not a new problem in Southeast Asia. But every time a major episode occurs, it serves as another reminder that
the environment has no borders.
We can draw national boundaries on a map.
But we can't tell smoke,
“Stop here. You've reached another country.”
-----------------------------
What Is the Indonesian Government Doing?
The Indonesian government has mobilized multiple agencies to respond to the situation, including ground firefighting, aerial patrols, water bombing, and weather modification operations intended to increase the chances of rainfall.
International cooperation has also played a role in supporting firefighting efforts in affected areas.
But peatland fires remain particularly difficult.
What looks from above like a thin layer of smoke may only be the visible part of the problem.
Underground, the fire may still be smoldering.
So even when the number of hotspots declines on a particular day, it doesn't necessarily mean the problem is over.
-----------------------------
A Side of Indonesia Travelers Don't Often See
Perhaps good travel isn't only about seeing the beautiful side of a place.
We may know Indonesia through its beaches, volcanoes, food, beautiful hotels, and spectacular sunsets.
But the same country is also home to forests, peatlands, local communities, dry seasons, and complicated environmental challenges.
When we travel somewhere, we aren't simply stepping into an Instagram backdrop.
We're entering a real place where people and nature actually live.
And sometimes, understanding what is happening there can tell us far more about a destination than taking another photograph ever could.
-----------------------------
Before You Go, Check More Than Just the Hotel Rate
If you're planning a trip to Indonesia right now, don't just check your flight, hotel deals, and the restaurants you want to try.
Add three more things to your checklist:
Weather.
Air Quality.
Local Updates.
Especially if you're heading toward an area affected by wildfires.
Because good travel isn't only about preparing for what we hope to experience.
It's also about understanding what the place we're about to visit is going through.
Indonesia is still Indonesia.
The beaches are still beautiful.
The volcanoes are still magnificent.
The food is still tempting.
And there are still countless stories waiting to be discovered.
It's just that, sometimes...
the sky may not be as blue as the one in the brochure.
And perhaps that's another part of travel worth paying attention to.
Travel well. Stay curious.
