A Facebook memory today reminded me of a season from 4 years ago when our family unexpectedly experienced kindness and hospitality during one of our most uncertain periods.

Back then, my husband had just lost his long-time job, and we were navigating many unknowns emotionally and financially as a family.

During that season, our neighbour unexpectedly asked whether we could help petsit while she travelled overseas for work. We welcomed the opportunity because honestly, we needed income then.

Not long after that was also going to be our elder son’s birthday. Every year, we would go for a simple family staycation. But that year, after searching for the most budget-friendly option possible, I told him we would only go for 1 night.

I still remember him innocently asking,
“Why not 2 nights?”

My heart quietly sank.

And I remember having this silent thought in my heart:
“If only someone could bless us with a staycation.”

Sometime later while chatting, our neighbour casually asked whether we had any travel plans now that borders were reopening. We shared about our elder son’s birthday staycation, and she thoughtfully offered us some complimentary hotel stays she had available.

Looking back now, I realise it was never really about the hotels themselves.

It was about what rest, care and hospitality meant to us emotionally during one of our family’s most uncertain seasons.

Perhaps part of why hospitality matters so much to us today through Nomad Haven is because we once experienced firsthand how meaningful a simple place of rest can become for someone walking through uncertainty.

Sometimes small acts of kindness leave deeper imprints on people than we realise.

A simple lunch discussion today, nothing fanciful — just one of those cafés we visit every now and then because it’s near our martial arts gym at Core Combat Chiang Mai 🍛🥊

One thing we’ve come to appreciate about Chiang Mai is how naturally it creates space for people to rethink life differently.

Part of our conversation today touched on the difference between business income and paid-per-time income, and how lifestyle design sometimes becomes just as important as income itself.

Over time, we slowly realised that perhaps physically changing our environment might also become part of our way forward.

But beyond affordability, the slower pace, accessibility of everyday life and overall environment also gave us space to rethink what kind of lifestyle we truly wanted.

In some ways, it reminds me of 孟母三迁 (Mèng Mǔ Sān Qiān) — “Mencius’ mother moving three times” — the old Chinese story about intentionally changing one’s environment for a better future.

Sometimes we don’t just need to think outside the box.

Sometimes we need to physically step outside the box too. 🌿

Yesterday’s family massage ended up being surprisingly meaningful for me.

For the first time, I spoke up about something that would help me feel more relaxed and present during the session.

I gently asked if the masseuses could power off their phones during the massage, and to my surprise, the request was received with so much kindness and understanding.

And honestly… it may have been one of the most restful massage sessions I’ve ever had. 🌿

Another unexpected benefit? The masseuses were fully present throughout the session too, which somehow made the whole experience feel even calmer and more grounded.

Living in Chiang Mai has slowly made us reflect on how deeply connected many of us still are to our devices — especially as digital nomads and remote workers.

Perhaps digital detox is not only about spending less time on our phones, but also intentionally allowing ourselves moments of truly switching off.

So here’s a simple experiment if you’re curious:

Try completely powering off your phone before sleep for one week and notice whether your rest feels any different. ✨

Sometimes the smallest changes create the deepest sense of rest.

One thing I’ve come to appreciate about Chiang Mai is how naturally it encourages people to step into new experiences and healthier rhythms.

Over the past week and a half, I intentionally continued training Muay Thai almost daily even while away — more than 10 sessions in total, including training with different coaches along the way.

There’s something about the training culture, slower pace and grounded lifestyle here that makes consistency feel more sustainable and enjoyable.

Beyond the physical training, I’ve also learnt so much from the coaches and people around me — about discipline, humility and simply respecting the process one session at a time. 💪🔥

And somehow, that’s part of what makes Chiang Mai special for many digital nomads and long-term travellers too.

This week I found myself going for Muay Thai training by myself 3 times while my husband is away ✈️

Feels good to simply move my body, sweat it out and enjoy the process again.

It probably also helps that the training environment is surrounded by rice fields, mountains and wide open skies in Chiang Mai 🌾⛰️ The natural breeze has been amazing too, especially now that the rainy season is slowly coming in and the weather is getting cooler.

One thing we’ve come to appreciate about Chiang Mai is how many new experiences here feel surprisingly approachable.

We actually had zero Muay Thai experience before coming here 🥊 But somehow the environment, people and slower pace made trying something new feel a lot less intimidating.

For digital nomads especially, it can also be such a refreshing way to step away from screens for a while, move the body again and reconnect with the present moment 🌿

So if you’ve ever been curious about trying Muay Thai while visiting Chiang Mai… maybe this is your sign too.

One of the things I appreciate about living in Chiang Mai is how it gently encourages you to try new things and embrace a more active lifestyle 🌿

This morning, I joined my Muay Thai class and to my pleasant surprise, we had a new female coach 👩

Really thankful for her patience as I’m still very much an amateur haha. I still have a lot to work on when it comes to my breathing and stamina, as I tend to run out of breath quite easily 😮‍💨

Recently, I’ve also become more conscious about building muscle strength and supporting long-term bone health. I always thought weights would be the main way to do that, but I’ve come to realise that Muay Thai also combines strength, mobility and flexibility training in such a dynamic way.

Definitely nowhere near proficient yet, but I would say I can still manage a few pretty decent punches and kicks lolll 🥊 Never imagined myself picking up martial arts in the first place.

And definitely not too old to start 🌱

Honestly also very inspired by the 61-year-old uncle in our class (whom we all affectionately call Shu Shu in Chinese) who shared that his health and energy improved tremendously after training daily. Such a beautiful reminder that movement and consistency can make such a difference over time 💪

Chiang Mai really does have a way of slowing you down while helping you grow at the same time ✨

One of the simple things I’ve come to appreciate about Chiang Mai 🌿

This morning, I finally visited the Chiang Mai Yunnan Market after hearing about it from friends for a while now. Somehow I just never got around to going myself as I usually get my groceries from the supermarket.

Fresh produce, warm conversations, local ingredients and the gentle rhythm of everyday neighbourhood life — these are often the moments that make Chiang Mai feel special beyond the usual tourist experiences.

I even came home with fresh Dang Gui (Chinese angelica root) for a nourishing soup ✨

Sometimes living in Chiang Mai feels less about rushing from place to place, and more about slowing down enough to enjoy the little moments in between.
