DISCOVER 5 TRADITIONAL JOBS STILL THRIVING ON KOH KRET

These enduring occupations offer a glimpse into the authentic rhythm of life on this charming riverside island.

1. MON POTTERY MAKER
Traditional Mon pottery makers are among the most iconic artisans of Koh Kret. They craft handmade earthenware using time-honored techniques passed down through generations. Using local clay and traditional kilns, they create functional pottery that reflects Mon-inspired craftsmanship, local wisdom, and the island’s well-preserved way of life.

2. FOOD AND SOUVENIR VENDOR
More than just running small home-based businesses, food and souvenir vendors turn heritage into everyday experiences. Produced and sold from home-front shops, these distinctive local products reflect Koh Kret’s cultural heritage. Each creation showcases the island’s flavors, creativity, and identity, making Koh Kret a place unlike any other.

3. FERRY BOAT OPERATOR
Regarded as the backbone of island life, ferry boat operators have been the essential link that keeps Koh Kret connected. As there are no bridges leading directly to the mainland, ferry services remain the island’s only means of access. Despite being a short trip across the Chao Phraya River, the ferry remains a cherished symbol of Koh Kret.

4. HERBAL PRODUCER
Many residents of Koh Kret continue to earn a living as herbal producers. They cultivate a range of healing herbs and medicinal plants in small household gardens. Available at small-scale local shops across the island, these products are known for their outstanding quality and natural herbal properties. Some brands have become very popular among herbal enthusiasts.

5. TEMPLE AND MONK CARETAKER
Temple and monk caretakers play an important role in sustaining the spiritual and cultural life of Koh Kret. They help maintain temple grounds, support monks in their daily activities, and assist with religious ceremonies and temple operations. Through their commitment and dedication, they are key contributors to preserving the island’s religious and cultural heritage.

These are the people behind the traditions that make Koh Kret truly special.

STAND APART, STAY ORIGINAL

Koh Kret has long welcomed visitors with its quiet charm, and among its cafés are a few beloved originals that opened their doors long before trends took hold. Week after week, their distinctive flavors and sincere hospitality continue to draw loyal guests back, not because they chase novelty, but because they stay true to who they are – authentic, familiar, and inviting.

At KAFAE BANLEKTEE NUENG (NO.1 COFFEE HOUSE), visitors are embraced by leafy garden comfort and genuine friendliness. Freshly brewed coffee and tea pair beautifully with comforting homemade Western dishes, while the owner’s love of jazz and the easygoing canal-side seating create a space that feels private and restorative, just like lingering with an old friend.

Meanwhile, COWBOY BAR surprises and delights with its playful spirit. Beneath its dive-bar vibe lies a dessert haven serving coconut puddings, herbal jellies, and savory chive dumplings. With music occasionally drifting from the owner’s guitar, guests are embraced in a relaxed warmth that turns a simple visit into a fond memory.

More than cafés, they are part of the island’s living and never-ending story.
