Today, many reefs are facing repeated bleaching events, stronger storms, unstable coral rubble, algae overgrowth and other pressures that make natural recovery much more difficult.

So where does coral restoration fit in?

The Similan Islands are one of the best places in Thailand for the chance to encounter oceanic manta rays. While sightings are never guaranteed, these incredible animals visit the islands throughout the diving season, making every encounter feel even more special.

The fish that make sand 🐟👇🏻

Parrotfish are among the most common fish on a coral reef, yet their importance is often overlooked.

As they graze on algae, they help keep reefs healthy by creating space for new corals to settle and grow. While feeding, they also grind down old coral skeletons into fine calcium carbonate sand, helping create the beautiful white beaches that make the Similan Islands so iconic.

This incredible encounter with a huge school of parrotfish shows just how much work these fish carry out every single day.

Every diver wants an unforgettable wildlife encounter. But sometimes, without realising it, divers can cause unnecessary stress to the very animals they're hoping to observe.👇🏻

1. Crowding & cornering wildlife
If several divers are already gathered around an animal, consider waiting for the area to clear before approaching. Surrounding wildlife or blocking an escape route can cause significant stress. In some cases, frightened animals may injure themselves while trying to escape. Moray eels, for example, can scrape or damage their skin as they retreat into narrow crevices.

2. Using lights & strobes carelessly
Video lights and strobes are valuable tools, but they should be used responsibly. Some marine life, including seahorses, frogfish and many nocturnal species, is more sensitive to light than others. Avoid prolonged exposure or repeated flashes. If an animal changes its behaviour, it's time to give it more space.

3. Interrupting natural behaviour
Every animal has natural behaviours that are essential for its survival. Feeding, resting, mating and visiting cleaning stations all play an important role in its health. Following an animal for too long or getting too close during these moments can interrupt those behaviours. Sometimes the best decision is to watch from a distance and move on.

Every choice underwater has an impact. Small changes in diver behaviour can make a big difference for marine life. 💙

Coral reefs might look like colourful underwater rocks, but they're actually made up of tiny living animals called coral polyps. 🪸

Many corals grow incredibly slowly, and even a light touch from a hand, fin, or piece of equipment can damage their delicate tissue. While a single contact may seem insignificant, repeated disturbance from thousands of divers and snorkellers can make corals more vulnerable to disease, algae, and other environmental stress.

The good news? Protecting reefs is simple. Practise good buoyancy, stay aware of your surroundings, and give marine life the space it deserves. Small actions from every diver help keep these ecosystems healthy for future generations!
