Some of the best finds underwater are the ones hiding right in front of you. 👻

Ghost pipefish are masters of camouflage, blending so perfectly into crinoids and reef life that they’re incredibly easy to miss. We’ve even watched the same individual change from almost black to white across several trips.

Once settled, they can stay in the same small area for some time — which means there are a few spots around West of Eden, Christmas Point, Koh Bon and Richelieu Rock that we always check. 👀

Since starting our DiveRACE coral restoration project in Phuket, we’ve restored 155m² of reef and planted 3,720 coral fragments — with a long-term goal of reaching 10,000m².

But supporting coral restoration isn’t only for divers. There are plenty of ways to get involved from above the surface, including learning more through our coral restoration workshops aboard MV DiveRACE Class X during Phuket’s low season.

There’s a lot to look at underwater… but some things should never leave your radar. 👀

No matter how experienced you are, good situational awareness is a huge part of being a safe, confident diver.

Keep checking your depth, NDL, gas, buddy and surroundings throughout the dive.

Conditions can change, currents can pick up, your gas consumption can vary, and it’s surprisingly easy to lose track of your buddy when something interesting swims past.

The goal isn’t to constantly stare at your computer — it’s to build the habit of regularly checking in with everything happening around you.🤿

Most of us learn to dive with a computer on our wrist — but how well do we actually understand what it’s telling us? 🤿

Depth, dive time, NDL, ascent rate and safety stops all help us understand and manage our dive profile. Modern computers also track repetitive dives and continuously recalculate as our depth changes.

But those precise numbers are still based on decompression algorithms. Your computer knows your dive profile, not your individual body, which is why understanding the information — and using it conservatively — matters.

A coral reef is basically an underwater city… and everyone has a job. 🐟

The corals build it. The grazers maintain it. Cleaner fish keep everyone in check, predators patrol the neighbourhood, and every now and then, a celebrity makes an appearance. 👀

And us divers? We’re just the tourists lucky enough to visit. 🤿

Every species plays a part in keeping this incredibly complex ecosystem running — and remove too many of them, and the whole system can start to change.
