This grand Roman mosaic portrays Neptune, the god of the sea, standing majestically at the center on a chariot drawn by sea creatures. Surrounding him are nymphs and marine deities, symbolizing the power and mystery of the ocean.
The outer scenes feature mythological figures, animals, and natural elements, creating a rich composition that reflects the harmony between gods, nature, and daily life in Roman times.

Dating back to the 2nd or 3rd century AD, this mosaic once decorated the floor of a wealthy Roman villa in ancient Tunisia. Its fine detail and monumental scale demonstrate the remarkable skill of North African mosaicists and the deep cultural influence of Greco-Roman mythology.

🇫🇷 Mosaïque du Poète et des Muses – Musée National du Bardo, Tunis

Cette superbe mosaïque romaine illustre un poète entouré de deux muses, allégories de l’inspiration artistique. À gauche, la muse Calliope (muse de la poésie épique) tient un rouleau, tandis qu’à droite, la muse Thalie (muse de la comédie) tient un masque de théâtre.
Le personnage central, souvent identifié comme le poète Ménandre, est assis, un rouleau manuscrit sur les genoux. Cette scène évoque le lien entre l’art, la littérature et la culture gréco-romaine, omniprésente dans les villas de l'élite africaine romaine.

✨ Cette œuvre témoigne du raffinement intellectuel et artistique de la société antique en Tunisie, autrefois province prospère de l’Empire romain.

We spent the day in Nabeul, the heart of Tunisia’s ceramic tradition. Each handcrafted piece is full of color, culture, and history—made with care by talented local artisans.
