Let Tunisia surprise you. When you picture the Mediterranean we bet you think of the Balearic, Greek or Italian Islands first, but North Africa’s Mediterranean coast is every bit as beach holiday-worthy as its European cousins. With gorgeous weather, no time difference and a flight time of under three hours from London, holidays to Tunisia are really hotting up with sun seekers of all kinds. With unique landscape that includes pretty beaches, lush greenery and the Sahara Desert, there’s always something new to discover. Whether you’re after an exotic escape with your partner or a laid-back family break, you’ll fall in love with the blend of African and Mediterranean culture, cuisine and character here.

Beaches
With nearly 1150km of coastline, you’re bound to find your perfect beach in Tunisia. If you’re looking for beautiful blues, the sky and sea here won’t disappoint – you can barely tell where the horizon meets the sparkling water. Mahdia Beach is a great all-rounder, with a family-friendly atmosphere and lots of space for couples to find a romantic spot to stretch out on the sand too. Lifeguards watch over the water at set times, and there are plenty of watersports opportunities and sun loungers available, whether you like to relax, adventure or have the best of both worlds. Another gem is Hammamet Beach, where the days are heavenly and the sunsets are spectacular. Go on a camel ride across the soft sand, take a boat trip along the coast or simply lay on a sun bed with a cocktail in hand – there is no wrong way to spend your Tunisia holidays.

Food & Drink
If you find yourself in a food market or restaurant-lined street, close your eyes and breathe in. Take in the perfume of spices and sweetness – we guarantee you’ll be transported back here any time you smell something similar back home. Like a kick to your food? Look out for dishes made with harissa – this blend of cumin, chilli, coriander, garlic, mint and more is a mainstay of Tunisian menus. We recommend sampling some fiery ojia, freshly baked eggs in a harissa sauce. This authentic dish is very popular with locals as well as tourists. Prefer a sweet treat? Ask for a yoyo. Don’t worry, you won’t be served a nostalgic plastic toy; a yoyo is Tunisia’s answer to a doughnut. Often served soaked in honey and lemon syrup, these are the ideal remedy for a sweet tooth. Pair it with a tipple of boukha – brandy made from figs - or a refreshing peppermint tea.

Culture
With Arabian origins and its proximity to Europe, Tunisia enjoys a fascinating mix of Arabic, Islamic and European culture. Visit the city of Carthage to find out more about the Roman era of this ancient country. The ruins here are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and tell a fascinating story of Tunisia’s past, all against the stunning backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea. If you prefer 21st century living, visit in October to attend the Carthage Film Festival – a modern, exciting celebration of cinema and creative thinking.

Nightlife
In Tunisia, the evenings start before the sun goes down with cocktails on your hotel terrace or in a beach bar overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. If you’re staying in Sousse, check out the Igloo Ice Bar. This venue is cool in every sense of the word, and makes a fun contrast to the daytime heat. In Port El Kantaoui, get your groove on at Discoteque Platinium, a nightclub with enough good vibes and good times to raise the roof. Hammamet’s nightlife offerings include wine bars and glitzy clubs like Calypso. Wherever you land in Tunisia, keep an eye out for cosy cafes – they often turn into vibrant sh**ha bars by night.
