The blue voyage, which was first started in 1964 with a cargo boat called “Hürriyet” (Liberty) belonging to Captain Ali from Marmaris, with the initiative of intellectuals of the period such as Sabahattin Eyüboğlu, Azra Erhat, Mina Urgan and Türkan Saylan, today continues at full speed with nearly 900 gulets and sail-boats registered in Marmaris Port. Blue Voyage tours that were being carried out with the ship named “Hürriyet” were introduced in the Sunday edition of The New York Times on 19th April 1970 and pioneered the beginning of such a holiday concept all over the world.☀️

📍Marmaris Castle and Archaeological Museum 🏰

Marmaris Castle, which is told to be built in 3000 BC according to Herodotus of Halicarnassus and which, on the other hand, told to be built in 1522, before the Rhodes Expedition of Sultan Suleiman (Suleiman the Magnificent), in well-known Seyahatname (Travel Book) written by Evliya Çelebi, is nowadays being used as a museum. Artworks belonging to the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Eras are being exhibited in the museum, which is located in the centre and consists of 4 main halls.

In Marmaris, which has a fertile geography, beekeeping and pine honey production stand out as the most important commercial activities after tourism. As a result of the application of the Marmaris Chamber of Commerce, Pine Honey was registered as a geographically indicated product in 2019, by Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. Marmaris Pine Honey, which is known to be produced intensively in the district since the 1500s, is produced by over 600 registered bee-keepers today, around 3000 tons per year in 145.000 bee-hives. The Honey House and Bee-Keeping Museum, which are located in Osmaniye Village in Marmaris, welcomes thousands of visitors every year. Local Bee-Keepers are trained at The Honey House all year round.

The ancient roads of the Carian Period are today designated as the Carian Trail Routes and are used by nature sports enthusiasts for trekking purposes. With a total distance of over 800 km, the Carian Trail is the longest Marked Trekking Path in our country. The ruins of the Carian Civilization appear at many points along the route. With its untouched beauty, the Canyon Trail passes through the Bozburun and Datca peninsulas. In the “World Gifts” project of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the above-mentioned areas are defined as “hot spots” due to their natural forest areas and a high number of endemic diversity.

Cleopatra (Kedrai) Island 🏝

“The wedding gift of the Roman Commander Antonius to the beautiful Queen Cleopatra” 💖

The local name “Cleopatra Island” comes from the legend, that the island’s sand was brought from Egypt by vessels for the Queen Cleopatra by her lover, the Roman Commander Antonius. Today, the sand is under protection and it is forbidden to enter the beach with shoes or towels. 🩴✖️

The Ancient City of Kedrai is also located on the island where you can reach with a short journey by boats departing from Çamlı Village, 17 km away from Marmaris. In the ancient city, whose history dates back to the 6th century BC, there are remains of the Temple of Apollo, an amphitheatre with a capacity of 2500 people, and an agora and ancient port.

Love is Always an Endless Legend 💕

According to the legend, daughter of the Bybassos King, the beautiful princess, goes to the sea for an escape from the pirates. As she doesn’t know how to swim, she fills her skirt with sands and tries to pass the cove. She loses her way when it get dark and as she ran out of sand, she drowns. This region “Kizkumu” named after her, meaning “maiden’s sand”.

Orhaniye Village, where Kızkumu, famous for its legend, is located, is 30 km away from Marmaris. Thanks to Kızkumu, which is a natural formation, you can walk 600 meters in the sea. Orhaniye is one of the prominent villages on the peninsula, with its marina and boutique hotels, which are among the leading ones in Turkey in terms of service quality and capacity.
