NEW on the BLOG: It’s been a minute but this Curaçao Travel Guide was a must because I had so much to share on where you can go, eat, and stay on the island!

It was an absolute pleasure to finally visit this colorful and culture-filled destination with Caribbean Airlines and the Curaçao Tourism Board!

I saw, did, learned, and ate so many wonderful things that I might have missed had I gone on my own so I’m eternally great for the opportunity and hope this guide helps you discover some of the special experiences the island has to offer!

Curaçao is known as a colorful island with tons of photo ops, but it's much more than that. Here's what you need to know to plan your visit!

Introducing...Sugar Shack!
Yes, I've found yet another cabin to crush on! And this one's on prime beachfront property!
At this point, a cabin on the beach is the best of both worlds for me so I was tres excited when I got the invitation to check it out for a few days! We're talking all the cute, coziness of cabin life but with the actual ocean just a few steps away 👌🏾
People asked which is better between Sugar Shack and Erasmus Cove but it's an impossible question to answer. It all depends on what you're looking for. The best I can say is, if the following describes the type of getaway you've been craving then Sugar Shack is calling your name:
✅ Far away from any crowds
✅ Just right for two people
✅ Close proximity to several beaches, including the one right outside
✅ Great outdoor living/work spaces
✅ Quaint aesthetic but with modern amenities and conveniences
✅ Watersports - kayaking and snorkeling
✅ Wifi (but no TV)
✅ Short walk or car ride to mini mart (and civilisation in general)
I could go on but those are the key points.
Bottom line: Sugar Shack offers an idyllic escape in Parlatuvier. So, if you're in need of a staycation or workation and you want to get away from all the activity in west Tobago, this is exactly the type of retreat you're looking for!

DINNER ON THE SWAMP:

Every once in a while things just fall into place for the perfect experience and the dinner cruise with Winston Nanan's Caroni Bird Sanctuary Tours is one such occasion.

I came across a video of the tour on my feed and shared it with a casual "Who wants to do this with me?" And almost immediately, a handful of ladies (some I hadn't seen since the pandemic hit, some I hadn't seen in years, some I didn't even know) responded and within a couple days we made a reservation!

I've dined on rivers, lakes, and seas but I had no clue what to expect of an evening on a swamp.

Despite seeing the video and reading an article about the tour, I was a little wary because I knew the boats weren't configured for this type of excursion and even though I had visual references I wasn't sold on it being the most comfortable experience.

Fortunately, this was one of those instances where reality exceeded expectations by leaps and bounds and miles!!!

From our knowledgeable, affable and hilarious guide, Lester, who put us at ease from the moment he began speaking and kept us laughing throughout the tour...to the incredible menu with some seriously delicious food that was served piping hot...to the breathtaking site of tens of thousands of brilliant scarlet ibis coming in to roost...to the company of some truly incredible women...the evening was amazing.

Quick notes on what you need to know:
- Private dinner tours can accommodate up to 14 people.
- Cost varies depending on the number of people but with a full boat we paid $300/person.
- The package includes a 3-course meal and non-alcoholic beverages. There are several menu options to choose from and you can bring your own alcohol.
- The tour is fun but also very educational as the guides make sure to point out any species they see and explain their specific role in the swamp's ecosystem.
- The tour lasts approximately 2.5 hours.
- No. Music. Allowed. It's a protected area and the experience is best enjoyed in peace and quiet anyway.
- It gets chilly after sunset so walk with a sweater/hoody for the latter part of the evening.
- Insect repellent is a must. Apply generously and reapply as needed.

I don't spend a lot of time exploring Trinidad but I'm trying to be better...and this tour with Winston Nanan was the best motivator. There are soooo many beautiful things to see and do on both of our islands and if nothing else, I appreciate that this pandemic has made so many of us seek out new experiences within our borders.

Many many many thanks to Lester, his First Mate and Winston Nanan Tours. This concept was a stroke of brilliance and a welcome addition to Trinidad's tourism product! I'm very much looking forward to trying out the breakfast cruise next!!!

Luckily, Tobago's got some Airbnb listings that provide the perfect mix of work and play. Check out my faves so far, and stay tuned for updates as I'll be booking a few more in the coming weeks/months!
