My mother was an alcoholic. I lived with her until I was 13. After that, she sent my 3 younger siblings and me to live at a children’s home in Sangre Grande called Bridge of Hope. I lived there till I was 21. She could not look after us because she was often drunk- she did not ever hurt us but she was verbally abusive. When she was sober she was so pretty with her long black hair and pretty face- she would hug us, tell us to do our school- work, make sugar cakes and tell jokes, I didn’t understand then but I realise now that she loved us enough to want more for us than she could give – and she wanted us to be safe. She went into rehab. but didn’t stay for long.
I’m pretty sensible- I want to be a role model for my siblings. I don’t drink even when I go out. I’m doing my degree in Mathematics, working and supporting myself. Even in those early days at home when we lived without electricity, I always did my Maths homework first using a lamp. People say that if you grow up in a children’s home or in an alcoholic household you won’t amount to much- I know that’s not true. I have big plans for my siblings and me.
My mother died last year after a night of drinking. She fell against a mirror. She was alone.

"My parents are Irish but I'm from Tobago. They fell in love with the island 20+ years ago and so it became our home. They own the 'The Fish Pot' restaurant. I grew up in Pleasant Prospect- the epicentre of strange and wonderful people. The environment, conservation, saving the turtles are all things that you can’t help but become involved in living there –I’m studying Biology in UWI and will specialise in Marine Biology and Ecology&Conservation. The earth doesn't belong to us, we belong to her. It’s up to us to look after her and be fair to all the other lives- plant and animal that we with live with. I've worked with SOS (Save Our Sea turtles, Tobago) and I love turtles! Seeing a nesting turtle is a humbling experience no matter how many times you've seen it happen. My name Niamh (pronounced Neeve) causes some consternation as it becomes the classic “Nyam” or "Neeumph". In Secondary school my classmates would wait for a new teacher to try and say it on the role call and sometimes even say my name in unison at the pause. It gets more complicated with my Dads name- “ Fiacra,” . Everyone just calls him Irish."

Good News Monday

Being a teenager:

“Oh my gosh- not what I expected. Heavy school schedule and extra lessons, best friends, acne, frizzy hair, chocolate cravings, needing music, needing alone time, best (best) friend moves to another country, trying to be myself but changing every day, awkward situations, not doing well in my Chemistry test but pushing myself for the next one, loving my family, trying to be interesting and useful but also needing not to think, art, moods, phone, trying to make my family and teachers proud, plum chow, mango season ,the moon, perpetual hunger pangs, resisting using slang in front of my parents, zoning out, trusting myself, never having enough sleep, clicking with my big brother. Every day is another chance.”

A tragic but enlightening piece of Trinidad history.

In the late 19th century, severe civil unrest in Venezuela saw an influx of thousands of Venezuelans to Trinidad. Now, this was not new, since from at least the 1840s peons known as the “cocoa panyols

"Healing With Horses"
"I first visited T&T from Germany 10 years ago at Carnival time. For the first time in my life I arrived somewhere and didn’t feel restless. I met my husband to be in Tobago and we have lived here since 2006. I have worked with horses my whole life; training, showing, and performing- they are my essence. Soon after I made the move, I heard of an abandoned & traumatised horse in Speyside. It took 6 months to gain her trust and finally she and I made the 20 hour walk to Buccoo where we live. With no trailers on the island, this was the only way. We have since added 8 more horses– those we rescued from maltreatment, abandonment, & injury that we have taken in as our family. HWH essentially means therapeutic sessions with differently abled children (currently 120) - those with speech/sight/hearing impairment, physical limitations, or suffering from trauma. This space is for them to heal, play, groom, ride and feed horses, do yoga and creative gardening. We don’t use bits, whips or saddles.. just words. The first words one boy with Downs Syndrome had ever spoken, at age 22, were“Walk On” to his horse. Children who have never walked can sit on a horse and experience the freedom of movement. The horses are the healers and therapists. We are the facilitators. I am at peace, honoured and grateful to be doing what we do."
