We do not hire our managers. We grow them.

Every supervisor at Dominion came up through the posts, and that is deliberate rather than accidental.

The reason is the interesting half. A supervisor who has worked a gate at two in the morning supervises a gate differently. They know which excuses are real and which are not. They know what a site feels like when it is being run properly, because they have felt it from the inside.

The pathway is not a mystery either. An officer who turns up, communicates and manages their post can reach corporal inside a month. Management is filled from inside rather than advertised outside.

For a client, that comes down to one line: the person supervising your site has done the job on your site.

One thing worth being clear about, because it is the opposite of what most people expect us to say. Officers staying with Dominion is not the same as officers staying on your post. We rotate officers between sites on purpose. Familiarity settles in over time, and that is not good for the client and not fair to the officer carrying it.

So what you get is not the same face forever. It is a settled team working to one standard, and a supervisor who came up through it.

A contingency plan usually covers the building and stops there. Shutters, stock up off the floor, furniture brought in. Most Tobago businesses have that part settled, and they settle it well.

Here is the half that tends to go unwritten:

✅ Photograph your stock and equipment today. A photograph taken today carries a date. One taken afterwards carries an argument.

✅ Back up your CCTV footage somewhere off the premises. Footage stored only on site is footage that goes when the site does.

✅ Secure or bring in anything outside that can move. Including the things you have stopped noticing, which are usually the ones that move.

✅ Agree who holds keys and who checks the site afterwards. The hours after an interruption are when a site is least watched, because everyone is dealing with their own home first.

✅ Write down who calls whom. Networks congest long before they fail, and a contact list that lives only in a phone may not be there when it is needed.

None of it costs anything, and all of it is easier to decide on an ordinary Tuesday than on the day everyone is busy.

A school has about four weeks left to settle in September.

Not to buy anything. To decide four things, write them down, and hand them to whoever will be standing at the gate on the first morning:

🛡️ Who controls the gate, and during which hours. Including evening use, weekend sport and holiday programmes, because each one brings people onto the compound who are not on anybody's list.

🛡️ How a contractor or a visiting parent is signed in, and how you know they left. A book that records arrivals and not departures cannot tell you at two in the afternoon who is still on your compound.

🛡️ What the arrangement is at drop-off and collection, including who is authorised to collect a child and what happens when somebody who is not on the list arrives and is entirely sincere about it.

🛡️ Who is called first when the day is interrupted, by weather, by a utility failure, or by something nearby.

None of those is complicated. All of them are much harder to settle in week one of term than they are now.

Most business owners put off asking for a security assessment because they assume it is a sales visit with a clipboard.

It is not. Here is exactly what happens.

1️⃣ We walk your site with you. At the time of day it is busiest, with whoever will actually be responsible.

2️⃣ We map your access points, your hours and your actual risk. Not the risk in general. Yours.

People notice the dogs. The reason the unit works is the handlers.

A K-9 team is not a dog and a person who happens to be holding the lead. It is two of them trained to read each other, until a handler knows what his dog has noticed before he has noticed it himself. That takes months, and it is the part nobody photographs.

The three things clients ask us most:

🐕 Are they safe around my staff? Yes, and they are handled on that basis. They are working animals kept under control, not dogs left to wander a compound.
🐕 Who looks after them? We do. The vet checks them monthly, the handlers feed them and clean up after them, and a dog that is not right does not go out.
🐕 What do they actually add? Deterrence you never have to use. A K-9 team changes behaviour on sight, which means most of what it prevents never happens and never gets counted.

One thing our handlers will always tell you on arrival: please do not pet them. They are not pets. They are on duty.

Most small businesses are not targeted because somebody worked hard to find them. They are targeted because a habit made them easy to read.

Five worth changing this week:

✅ Vary your time and your route. A pattern is an invitation.
✅ Use a plain bag. Nothing that announces what is inside it.
✅ Bank in pairs where you can. Two people change the maths.
✅ Never count at the counter, the car door, or on the pavement.
✅ Tell your team the plan. Do not tell them the schedule.

None of that costs anything. It is simply the difference between being predictable and not being predictable.

And if your takings have grown past what a routine can safely carry, that is the point at which cash-in-transit stops being an expense and starts being cheaper than the risk.

Your guest should never have to notice how well they are protected.

A guest arriving at a Tobago hotel is tired, carrying bags, and forming an opinion in about four seconds. Good hospitality security is the reason that opinion is a good one. The car park feels safe.
