There's more to spotting wildlife than simply looking… 👀🐘

When you're out on safari in Tanzania, it's easy to focus on the animals right in front of you. But there's often so much more happening in the background. A footprint in the dirt, a distant call, or a subtle change in an animal's behavior can all tell part of a bigger story.

Behind Ndifo is a story that started long before there was a safari company.

Today, Steven Ngowi is the founder and lead guide of Ndifo Safari, with his journey also leading to the creation of the Ndifo Community Development Foundation. But his story began much earlier… with his grandfather, a different plan for his future, and a relationship with Tanzania’s wildlife that would eventually shape much more than a career.

This short film is part of a bigger story about becoming a guide, building Ndifo, giving back to the communities around him, and the people and experiences that shaped everything along the way.

This is the story of Steven Ngowi.

The Hadzabe Tribe 🏹 …a way of life that has been passed down for generations…

In northern Tanzania, the Hadzabe are one of the country's Indigenous communities, with hunting and gathering continuing to play an important part in their culture and way of life. Spending time with the community offers a glimpse into traditions, skills and knowledge that have been carried through generations. A perspective on daily life very different from our own.

We share plenty from the game drives, but perhaps not enough of the places you come back to afterwards. Canvas walls, comfortable beds, meals around the table and the Serengeti just outside.

It’s simple, comfortable and connected to the place you’ve traveled all this way to experience. Consider that our excuse to share a few of our favorite photographs.

There’s a certain warmth to the landscape here…

It changes throughout the day - softer in the morning, brighter across the open plains, then deeper again as the sun begins to fall. The wildlife moves through it. The grass carries it. Even the quieter moments between sightings seem to take on the same tone.

It becomes part of how you remember safari. Not only by what you saw, but by the landscapes you moved through, the changing light, and the feeling of being somewhere so different from home.

A name can say a lot about where something came from. For Steve, Ndifo is connected to family, to Tanzania, and to a story that began long before the safari company itself. It’s something that has shaped the way he sees guiding, nature, and the importance of what we leave behind.
