Hippos are some of the most fascinating (and surprisingly intense) creatures on the planet. Here are five facts that highlight just how unique they are:
1. They Produce Their Own "sunscreen"
Hippos don't have sweat glands. Instead, they secrete a thick, red fluid often called "blood sweat." It isn’t actually blood or sweat; it’s a specialized liquid that acts as a high-performance moisturizer, a water repellent, and a powerful antibiotic sunblock to protect their sensitive skin from the African sun.
2. They are secretly "River Ballerinas"
Despite being the third-largest land mammal, hippos aren't great swimmers—and they actually can't float. They are so dense they sink to the bottom. To move through the water, they walk or gallop along the riverbed. They can even "porpoise" through the water by pushing off the bottom in a graceful, rhythmic motion.
3. Their Teeth Are Weapons, Not Tools
A hippo’s massive canine teeth and incisors can grow up to 50 centimeters (20 inches) long. Interestingly, they don’t use these teeth for eating grass; they are purely for combat and defense. Their bite force is roughly 12,600 \text{ kPa} (1,800 \text{ psi}), which is strong enough to snap a wooden boat or a large crocodile in half.
4. They Are "Eco-Engineers"
Hippos play a vital role in their ecosystems through a process sometimes called "nutrient cycling."" They graze on land at night and then return to the water during the day to deposit massive amounts of waste. This dung provides essential nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus to fish and aquatic plants, supporting the entire river food chain.
5. They Are Surprisingly Fast
You wouldn't guess it by looking at their barrel-shaped bodies, but hippos are incredibly athletic. On land, they can reach speeds of 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances. For context, that is faster than most humans can sprint, making them one of the most dangerous animals to encounter in the wild
