In the Heart of the Serengeti: A Photographer’s Prayerful Reflection
From the time I was a young boy, my heart has always been drawn to the wild. There is something profound about stepping into a realm that is completely of God, untouched and authentic, where every creature moves according to its own nature. When I press the shutter of my camera, it’s more than just capturing a moment—it’s an act of gratitude and reverence for the gifts the Lord has granted me.
On our recent expedition, we journeyed north into the Central Serengeti, guided by the keen eyes and knowledge of our guides Kambona and M***a. They led us to a formation of massive rocks and boulders dotting the savanna—an oasis of shade and shelter for some of Africa’s most magnificent inhabitants. Much to our amazement, three large male lions and two lionesses had gathered there, likely forming a new pride. We spent nearly five unforgettable hours watching and photographing them from a respectful distance of just forty yards.
From my vantage point atop the boulders, I felt my soul stir with awe. To witness these regal lions in their element—roaring, resting, and simply being—was nothing short of humbling. It wasn’t merely about taking pictures; it was an opportunity to be in the presence of God’s creation. Each time I clicked the shutter; I whispered a word of thanks. In that instant, my role as a wildlife photographer and naturalist felt more like a calling than a career.
A joy that has grown exponentially for me is being able to share these experiences with my wife, Dia. Watching her develop into an accomplished photographer herself—witnessing her excitement and seeing how these encounters impact her—is a blessing that fills my heart with even greater gratitude. It is a profound privilege to stand side by side, each of us using our talents to capture the raw splendor of the natural world. Thank you, Lord, for allowing us to walk this path together.
Through the years, I have often encountered images and moments that shift something deep within me—this was one of those times. Looking into the eyes of these lions, I was overwhelmed by how blessed I am to see such beauty up close. I thought of the immense responsibility that comes with preserving and sharing these scenes so that others might also feel their power.
There are those who might not see photography as art. Perhaps they imagine it’s just about pointing and shooting, but there is a deeper craft and purpose involved. Being a wildlife photographer demands patience, knowledge of animal behavior, the technical skill to handle varied light and weather conditions, and above all, a profound respect for the creatures whose lives we document. It is an exercise not only of skill, but of faith—trusting God to place us in the right position at the right time to witness something meaningful.
My hope and prayer is that through my photography, others will be encouraged to see the world in a new light, to appreciate how truly vital it is to safeguard wild places throughout this planet. When we stand among untamed creatures and landscapes, we step into a grander story—one that testifies to the Creator’s hand at work.
May my photographs serve as a reminder that we are all stewards of God’s creation. May they awaken an awareness of how precious and fragile these environments are, and inspire a reverence that leads us toward protection and conservation. And above all, may you feel the same sense of wonder and gratitude that fills my heart every time I encounter His work in the wild.
Stay tuned for another post soon, where I will share more compelling photographs and stories of these magnificent lions.
