As luck would have it, one of the big bulls we were watching decided to head straight towards our hiding place.

When an elephant is about to stumble upon you at close range, a controlled introduction is often preferable to a sudden surprise. Once he realised we were there, he expressed his opinion with a few grumbles, turned away, and continued down to the river, leaving everyone a little wiser and with a healthy respect for personal space.

From the ancient baobabs that have watched over this land for centuries, to the great elephant bulls that still wander beneath them. Encounters like this are a reminder that we are merely visitors in their world.

It can take years to habituate wildlife to the presence of vehicles, and even longer to earn their trust.

When we first started exploring this corner of Ruaha 13 years ago, the mere sight of a vehicle would often send the cats racing for the hills. Today, it’s a very different story. Several generations of cubs have now been born and raised with our guests quietly observing their lives from a respectful distance.

The result is something truly special. These days, our beloved Kichaka Pride barely gives us a second glance, allowing us rare and intimate glimpses into their world. A privilege built not in days or months, but over years of patience, consistency, and respect.
