Topis are medium-sized antelopes with a striking reddish-brown to purplish-red coat and distinctive black markings on their face, legs, hips, and thighs. Their yellowish-tan legs resemble stockings, giving them a unique look.

Closely related to the hartebeest, topis are smaller with a shorter head and lower shoulder height. Females are lighter in color, and both sexes have thick, ringed, lyre-shaped horns (30–40 cm). Known for their sharp vision, hearing, and speed, topis move with a graceful, bounding gait.
