Late September in central Serengeti: the grass is dry, the sky is hazy, and the wind has almost nothing to stop it. Few trees, long open plains, and a horizon that keeps going.
It’s like that because of a volcano. Ol Doinyo Lengai, the “Mountain of God,” erupted again and again, and the wind carried its ash across the land. Rain turned that ash into a layer of stone just under the soil. Tree roots can’t break through it, but grass can grow on it.
So the wind helped build these plains, and now the plains let the wind run free. Lions rest in the open, elephants cross the dry grass, and the same wind that shaped the land ruffles every mane. 🐘
