Kitame Camel Company

Kitame Camel Company Kitame Camel Co is jointly owned by Fuad Latiff and Ken Brunk. We have three thatched shelters up and are adding a shower and toilet to each one.

We now have a bungalow for Selemani and his family, who look after the coconuts, goats and chickens. We are in the process of building elevated thatched huts along the Indian Ocean to catch the nice sea breeze. This is located in Kitame, a village just south of the Wami River. Selemani is our caretaker and lives there with his wife and three children. Fuad Latiff, our partner in Tanzania, has two

4-wheel drive vehicles set up for safaris to the game parks or any other destination. He can take care of any transportation needs you may have as well as assist in planning. We have connections with safari companies in Kilimanjaro region for tours of the Northern Game Parks; Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Manyara and others. Both owners speak Swahili and English and they are available by cell phone most of the time.

Safari field kitchen with service for 6-8 people. Antique primus stove, kettle, fire grate and 2 stockpots, french coffee press and grinder, plates, cups, silverware and 2 serving platters. The lid comes off to form a small table. Broke the glass press too often so made one from stainless. Grinder attaches to the press with thumb nuts so you grind straight into the press.

Fuad tells me that the water storage tank for Kitame village is about complete. Good news, indeed! We will need to run a connecting line from the village to the camp and finally be able to forego the constant trips to the river for water.

Sadly, we lost a load of sand and cement on the way up from Bagamoyo. Jahazi (dhow) swamped in rough sea but no lives lost. All the wood survived, of course and was floated to the beach.

Torrential rains along the East African coast. Roads between Bagamoyo and Dar washed out. Little damage at the camp but getting in and out is by dhow or walking and fording swollen rivers. The watertower project at Kitame dispensary has come to a standstill until the water recedes.

I just received word that the government of TZ bought a 600 seat ferry from Denmark and are initiating service from Dar es Salaam to Bagamoyo in May. My guess is that eventually that service will be extended north to Saadani, Pangani and Tanga.

One of the tasks we completed at Kitame was the initial installation of the diesel Petter genset for power. The generator is from the Horst brothers in Dayton and set up for 220 volt and 50 hz operation. It is rated 10 KVA but as we are running at 1500 rpm for 50 hz, the output would be lower. Battery start but also hand crank starting if needed.
