On Thursday, April 3rd, The Empty Grave was screened at the in Dar es Salaam.
The screenings aim to raise awareness about the current state of restitution efforts, expand the community of restitution advocates, and spark broader dialogue around contemporary decolonisation, cultural identity, and historical accountability.
The audience responded with mixed emotions—a blend of reflection, sadness, and curiosity. After the screening, attendees engaged in a meaningful discussion, asking questions about what has been done so far to support the restitution process, what inspired the telling of this story, and the deeper significance of returning ancestral remains and looted artefacts to their rightful homes. Most importantly, the conversation centred around the critical question: what happens after these ancestral remains and looted artefacts are returned?
Thank you to Karen for hosting the screening.
