Halima Geuya is an educator, writer, and creative researcher whose storytelling spans children's literature, poetry, fiction, and feminist historiography. She is currently documenting the life of Li’ti Kidanka, a forgotten heroine of anti-colonial resistance in central Tanzania, with a focus on decolonising historical narratives and amplifying women’s voices. A published author of Kiswahili children's books and poems in acclaimed literary journals, Halima is passionate about creating stories that celebrate African heritage, challenge silences around marginalised communities, and reimagine local histories.
At Kijiweni Productions, she is excited to explore how to blend her love for narrative with visual storytelling that educates, entertains, and empowers.

Karibu sana Halima to the team!

On Thursday, April 3rd, The Empty Grave was screened at the in Dar es Salaam.

The screenings aim to raise awareness about the current state of restitution efforts, expand the community of restitution advocates, and spark broader dialogue around contemporary decolonisation, cultural identity, and historical accountability.

The audience responded with mixed emotions—a blend of reflection, sadness, and curiosity. After the screening, attendees engaged in a meaningful discussion, asking questions about what has been done so far to support the restitution process, what inspired the telling of this story, and the deeper significance of returning ancestral remains and looted artefacts to their rightful homes. Most importantly, the conversation centred around the critical question: what happens after these ancestral remains and looted artefacts are returned?
Thank you to Karen for hosting the screening.

The Baden-Württemberg Film Prize 2024 in the documentary film category awarded by the Baden-Württemberg Film Office and the Stuttgart House of Documentary Film goes to the directing team and for the documentary film ‘The Empty Grave’

Jury statement

“With remarkable sensitivity and narrative power, the directing duo Agnes Lisa Wegner and Cece Mlay tackle a largely repressed chapter of German colonial history. Their film, ‘The Empty Grave’ not only makes the cruelty of this time tangible, but also the painful challenges that descendants of the victims still have to face today. The filmmakers give the people behind the story a voice and their film an emotional depth that touches us deeply.

‘The Empty Grave’ is neither a pure accusation nor a simplistic solution, but a courageous, differentiated contribution to an issue that affects us all. A film that reminds us that true reconciliation can only be achieved through actions and whose message resonates far beyond the cinema.”
