Meet the Southern Ground Hornbill – one of Africa’s most fascinating birds! 🐦

Unlike most hornbills, the Southern Ground Hornbill spends most of its time walking on the ground, searching for insects, snakes, lizards, and small mammals. These intelligent birds live in family groups and can cover several kilometers in a single day while foraging. Their deep booming call can be heard from far away across the African bush.

With their striking black feathers and bright red facial skin, they are among the largest hornbill species in the world and are often considered a symbol of the wild African savanna.

During our game drive in Mikumi, we came across a confident male warthog approaching a female during the mating season. This is a natural courtship behavior where the male follows and shows persistence, while the female evaluates his strength and suitability. It’s a simple but fascinating reminder of how wildlife interacts in the wild.
