Mount Kilimanjaro - Tanzania's Crown Jewel
1️⃣ General Overview
Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the world's tallest free-standing mountain, standing at:
✅ 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level
✅ Located in northern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya, Kilimanjaro is part of the Kilimanjaro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
✅ It is a dormant stratovolcano made of three volcanic cones:
Kibo (the highest, with Uhuru Peak at the summit)
Mawenzi
Shira
2️⃣ Geological Formation
Formed approximately 3 million years ago through volcanic activity along the East African Rift system.
Kibo, the central peak, is dormant but not extinct; the last major eruption occurred about 360,000 years ago.
Mawenzi and Shira are extinct volcanic cones.
Kilimanjaro's summit features glaciers and snowfields, though they have been retreating significantly due to climate change.
3️⃣ Ecosystems & Biodiversity
Kilimanjaro has distinct climatic and ecological zones from base to summit:
Zone Elevation (meters) Key Features
Cultivated Footslopes 800 – 1,800 m Villages, banana/coffee farms, lush gardens
Montane Forest 1,800 – 2,800 m Rainforest, colobus monkeys, diverse birds
Heath & Moorland 2,800 – 4,000 m Giant lobelias, heathers, dramatic landscapes
Alpine Desert 4,000 – 5,000 m Rocky, barren, extreme temperature variations
Arctic Summit Above 5,000 m Ice fields, glaciers, snow, volcanic crater
Wildlife includes elephants, buffalo, colobus monkeys, and various bird species in the lower zones.
The mountain's biodiversity is protected under Kilimanjaro National Park, governed by TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority).
