Zebras and Wildebeests are Naturally Great Friends!

WHY? Each of them has their own unique qualities that boost the survival chances of the herds in the wilderness. Though both are grazers feeding on the same plant, they live and migrate together without competition.

INTERESTING FACTS:

Wildebeest and zebras can migrate in harmony and benefit from each other’s company.

1. They both prefer different parts of the grass when grazing and so there is no conflict of interest in terms of food. Wildebeests are short grass grazers while zebras have long front teeth which facilitates them in feeding upon longer grass. So, when the herd enters a new area, zebras basically mow the whole area which helps wildebeest to feed upon soft parts of the grass, and then zebras feed upon the leftover parts. So, the feeding pattern works out for both of them.

2. Zebras have good memories and they are good travelers as they can remember the directions and they watch carefully when and where to cross places before jumping in.

3. Wildebeest on the other hand move in herd without much thought which many of the times lead to their peril as well. So being with zebras gives wildebeest better navigating capabilities.

4. Wildebeests are good in sensing water and this feature is very helpful to both the species when they are migrating in dry lands of Eastern African jungles.

5. Wildebeest are sharp in smelling from a far distant while Zebras have better earing and seeing capabilities which helps them in sensing danger better.

Materuni waterfall | Village & coffee Tour
A tour to Materuni Village and Waterfalls is a great way to spend a day away from the bustle of town life. The walk to Materuni Waterfall offers a glimpse into the nature of Tanzania allowing you either to prepare your body for your holiday in Tanzania or stretch your muscles before or after the Safari and/or Kili climb.

The Materuni Waterfall tour starts with a walk through the area adjacent to the waterfall, rich in beautiful natural scenery of Tanzania. It is an opportunity to see how local fruit like mangoes, avocados, lemons, and bananas grow, as well as learn some of the local history, traditions, village economy, agricultural and cultural life. When you get to the waterfall, you can refresh yourself in the natural pool, so swimsuits will come in handy!

The tour continues with a visit to the local village lying in the coffee & banana plantations. villagers will treat you with local lunch - (Chagga meal). When you are done with lunch, the villagers will demonstrate the process of coffee farming and guide you through the preparation of coffee from a bean to a cup. Sing and dance along with the Chagga people as they are grinding, roasting and boiling the beans.

Let’s go for a nice hike, a coffee experience and a fresh local lunch!

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT: FLAMINGOS
Flamingoes are among the most intriguing types of birds due to their pink feathers and well-known long necks. One of the stunning bird’s species that many tourists adore,

Flamingos aren’t naturally pink!: One of the most recognizable traits and features of these majestic birds is their bright pink colour! But did you know that they are not born this way? During their birth, Flamingos are naturally grey. The saying “you are what you eat” is absolutely true for these birds as they get their pink colour from their diet. They primarily eat shrimp and algae that contain carotenoid pigments, which is what makes their feathers bright pink!
They are masters of balance! Flamingos are very well-known for their ability to stand on one leg, but there’s so much more behind this behaviour. Standing on one leg is a way to tuck the leg closer to the torso that minimises heat loss, helping the bird to conserve body heat. Studies have noted that this also allows these birds to spend long hours in water even when the weather becomes cold. Another reason for the bird to do this is to reduce muscle fatigue, as standing on one leg is less tiring than standing on two. Flamingos are surprisingly comfortable standing on one leg, and oftentimes also fall asleep in the same position!
Flamingos Lay One Large Egg per year on Average: Both males and females have sweet dance moves: For many bird species, it’s the males that put grand displays to attract a mate. Flamingo courtship rituals are more egalitarian with both male and female flamingos taking part in a special dance. Like a flash mob, they’ll come together in large groups to show off synchronized dance moves such as head-flagging, wing salutes, twisting, preening, bowing and marching. Most flamingos only stay with their mate for the season which means that this party starts all over again the next year.
The greatest locations to see flamingos are in the lakes in Northern Tanzania such as Lake Manyara, Lake Natron, Lake Magadi in the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Ndutu, and Momela Lakes in found in Arusha National Park.
