DAY 4 — RONGAI ROUTE | MAWENZI TARN → KIBO HUT

Today we leave the spectacular Mawenzi Tarn behind and continue across the high-altitude alpine desert toward Kibo Hut, the final camp before summit night on Mount Kilimanjaro.

📍 Distance: approximately 10 km
⏱️ Trekking time: 5–7 hours
⛰️ Elevation: 4,300 m → 4,703 m

The trail gradually takes us across a stark and beautiful landscape, with Mawenzi Peak fading behind us as Kibo becomes our main focus. The terrain is dry, rocky and increasingly barren as we approach the summit zone.

Kibo Hut sits at approximately 4,703 m on the eastern side of Kibo, the highest volcanic cone of Kilimanjaro. From here, climbers prepare for the final and most demanding stage of the journey — the summit attempt.

Today is not only about reaching Kibo Hut. It is about conserving energy, staying well hydrated and allowing the body to adapt to the increasing altitude. The landscape becomes quieter and more dramatic with every step.

As we arrive at Kibo Hut, the summit of Kilimanjaro is no longer a distant dream. Uhuru Peak is now within reach.

DAY 3 — RONGAI ROUTE | KIKELELWA CAMP → MAWENZI TARN

Today we leave Kikelelwa Camp at around 3,600 m and climb steadily toward one of the most spectacular camps on Mount Kilimanjaro — Mawenzi Tarn, sitting at approximately 4,300–4,330 m.

⏱️ Trekking time: 3–4 hours
⛰️ Elevation gain: about 700 m

The trail is short but steep, and every step brings us closer to the dramatic volcanic spires of Mawenzi. Arriving at Mawenzi Tarn feels completely different — you are surrounded by rugged volcanic rock, alpine desert landscapes and the towering walls of Mawenzi Peak.

Mawenzi is the second-highest volcanic cone of Kilimanjaro and one of the most fascinating parts of the mountain. It is an ancient Pleistocene volcanic formation, meaning its major volcanic activity happened hundreds of thousands of years ago. There is no exact recorded year for its last eruption.

One of the special features of Mawenzi Tarn is the water found in the tarn. Its presence makes this remote high-altitude landscape even more remarkable and provides an important water source for climbers and mountain life.

This is more than just a short hiking day — it is a day of walking deeper into the geological history of Kilimanjaro, with Mawenzi standing directly above us.

Rongai Route gives you a different perspective of Kilimanjaro — quieter trails, dramatic landscapes and an unforgettable experience beneath Mawenzi.

Day 2 on the Rongai Route 🏔️

The adventure continues from Simba Camp, trekking 8 km to Second Cave, where we stop for a well-deserved hot lunch. After recharging, we continue another 5 km to Kikelewa Camp, our destination for the night.

Today’s journey also marks a dramatic change in scenery as we enter the beautiful Moorland Zone. The dense forest gives way to shorter vegetation, wide-open landscapes, and breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro. This is one of the most scenic sections of the climb, offering incredible photo opportunities and a true sense of the mountain’s changing ecosystems.

Every step brings you closer to the summit and deeper into the unforgettable experience of climbing Africa’s highest peak.

Welcome to the adventure of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route - the only route that approaches the mountain from the northern side, near the Kenya-Tanzania border.

Our journey begins at Rongai Gate (2,364m) and continues to Simba Camp, covering approximately 7 km in 3 - 4 hours at a comfortable hiking pace.
