The thunderous Murchison Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in East Africa!

Its popularity derives from the intriguing way in which the Nile river surges through a narrow gap over a massive drop creating the spectacular sight (and sound) you see in this photograph.

Common wildlife you are likely to see here include hippos and elephants. You can also catch a glimpse of a family of chimpanzees in the nearby Kaniyo Pabidi mahogany forest.

This green lake is one of several crater lakes found in Kichwamba, Rubirizi district. It was formed as a result of volcanic activity that took place in the area centuries ago. It is known by its traditional name, Nyungu but it is not universally understood why its water is green as several theories abound.

According to folklore, many of the little islands you see floating around the lakes these days used to be complete villages teaming with activity and civilization. Gradually, however, the lakes begun to reclaim these land masses until only a small fraction of them were left.

Migration consequently followed as the villagers looked for safer, more habitable areas and the general purpose of these islands changed. Some of them turned into prisons for outlaws or banishment centers for social outcasts and misfits.
