Hiking the Rwenzori Mountains is a journey unlike anything else in East Africa a climb through five dramatic vegetation zones, each more unbelievable than the last.
You’ll move from thick rainforests to bamboo slopes, into the heather and mossy landscapes that make the Rwenzori feel almost otherworldly. Higher up, giant lobelias and groundsels rise like ancient sculptures, and the air grows colder as the trail approaches the alpine zone.
Expect muddy paths, boardwalk crossings, steep ascents, and weather that can change in minutes it’s all part of the adventure. Camps along the trail offer warm meals, rest, and the chance to soak in how far you’ve come.
For those pushing to the top, the final reward is Margherita Peak (5,109 m) Uganda’s highest point where rock, ice, and clouds meet on one of Africa’s last remaining equatorial glaciers. A summit that stays with you long after the descent.
