The power struggle is still on: Umutama’s diplomacy has been observed by chimpanzee care team and his influence is again felt in the community he displays a lot by stamping and slapping so hard on the floor to calm the disputes among community members without hurting anyone. Silver back injured in the fight (mountain gorillas)

Dominant silverback Kanyonyi of Mubare group was recently injured in a fight with a lone silverback in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Drs. Fred, Jan and Communications Officer Jess Burbridge traveled to Buhoma to trek to the group prepared for a medical intervention. Kanyonyi had several deep lacerations on both wrists, his right shoulder, right elbow, and right side of his face. The wounds on his right wrist were necrotic and becoming infected and his stomach was not full, indicating he was not feeding normally. Dr. Fred successfully darted Kanyonyi with antibiotics to speed the healing process, but was unable to dart with anti-inflammatory meds as the silverback fled from the team after the first dart. The intervention was documented by Gryphon - Wild Planet Productions for an upcoming series Niall McCann in Biggest and Baddest. More details on the blog soon.
