What do African elephants eat?

African elephants can consume up to 300 kilos of food a day.
They also ingest salts to neutralise the toxins in leaves and bark.
Elephants have a varied vegetarian diet that includes leaves, shoots, bark, grass, fruits and seeds, but they have particular preferences and dislikes.
As a result, elephants have a huge influence on which plants dominate, disperse or disappear within a local ecosystem.

Pangolins, fascinating creatures that have existed for 80 million years, are perfectly adapted to their lifestyle.

Covered in sharp scales, they are protected from predators. With strong claws, they dig into nests to feed on ants and termites, using their sticky tongue to capture insects. Their prehensile tail helps them climb trees and carry their young.

When threatened, they roll into an armored ball for protection.

Today, around 350,000 savannah elephants remain. Forest elephants are obviously far harder to count, but numbers are estimated to have fallen by an astonishing 86% in just 30 years.

Savannah vs. Forest Elephants

Forest elephants, now recognized as a distinct species, differ significantly from savannah elephants.
They are smaller, with darker skin, smaller ears, and straighter, downward-facing tusks. As their names suggest, they thrive in dense forests, unlike savannah elephants, which favor open plains.

“The pangolin is a unique and wonderful creature that is being trafficked on an industrial scale.
Eradicating pangolin poaching and trade is a priority for Fauna & Flora and our partners as we seek to extend and strengthen practical, on-the-ground actions to protect pangolin populations at our project sites around the world.”
