In the late 19th century, Buganda was a kingdom in transition-caught between tradition and new beliefs brought by missionaries.
As Christianity began to spread, tension grew within the royal court of Kabaka Mwanga II. Many young pages chose to follow their new faith, guided by leaders like Saint Kizito-one of the youngest martyrs.
Between 1885 and 1886, these believers were executed at Namugongo for standing firm in what they believed. Their sacrifice marked a turning point, not just in religion, but in the history and identity of Uganda.
Today, Uganda Martyrs Shrine stands where their lives were taken-but also where their legacy lives on, especially during Uganda Martyrs Day.
