Tourists often return home with up to 60% of their money because destinations offer limited spending opportunities, including few high-quality local products, weakly packaged experiences, and minimal community-based activities. Much tourism revenue leaks to foreign-owned airlines, hotels, and operators, while poor marketing and an inactive night economy further restrict visitor spending. Many tourists also stay for short periods and lack information on what else they can do. To solve this, destinations must diversify and improve local tourism products, create attractive and bookable cultural and nature-based experiences, develop night markets and safe evening activities, reduce revenue leakages, strengthen digital marketing, extend visitor stay through multi-day packages, and empower communities to offer guided tours, performances, food experiences, and eco-activities. This holistic approach ensures tourists spend more within local economies, benefiting households, SMEs, and conservation initiatives.
