THREE REASONS TO CHECK YOUR PASSPORT RIGHT NOW
TRAVEL TIPS | WRITTEN BY SUSAN

A new year brings a slew of resolutions and opportunities — and travel is at the top for us. But whether your plan is to take a fabulous honeymoon, plan a romantic getaway or a trip with friends, or just be ready to hit the road at the right opportunity, now is the perfect time to make sure you’re ready to go international when the time comes. Many people don’t know this, but just having a valid passport isn’t enough to ensure smooth travels, and there are multiple reasons that a country can deny entry to someone holding a seemingly valid passport. Here’s what you need to check, asap.

Expiration date. This seems like an obvious one, but it’s not. Why? Most countries not only require a valid passport, but they require it to be valid for at least six months after the date you intend to leave that country. Which means you can plan to fly to Italy with three months left on your passport and still be denied boarding, or worse yet be denied entry at the border and have to turn around and fly home So if your passport is expiring any time in 2017, now is the time to get it renewed!

Blank pages: Most countries issue visa stamps upon entry, leaving you with those pretty stamps to fill up your pages. But just like with expiration date, there’s a catch, and having one blank page left isn’t enough to guarantee entry. Many countries require that you have multiple blank pages available for visas. It changes from place to place (South Africa requires at least two), so I always make sure I have three or four blank pages, just in case. It’s well worth it to avoid being denied entry, not to mention avoid getting the stink-eye from a cranky immigration agent who’s tired of flipping through your passport in search of a blank page to stamp.

Wear and tear on your cover: It’s not just what’s inside your passport that matters, but what’s on the outside, too. Immigration agents can deny entry if your passport cover is torn, water logged, punctured or otherwise damaged. (Damage is a tip-off for potential fraud, and they always err on the side of caution.) If your cover is tatty and tired, get it replaced or recovered before you travel. You can do this via the U.S. Passport office, or in a hurry via a passport expeditor. If your passport gets damaged while traveling, you’ll need to head to nearest U.S. consulate or embassy in order to get it sorted out, which can be inconvenient — not to mention expensive if it delays your return. So your best bet is to keep it from getting damaged in the first place by carrying it in a groovy passport holder. (We love the ones at Flight 001.)

With the upcoming enforcement of the REAL ID Act, which requires federally approved IDs for boarding of domestic flights (among other things), more people than ever are expected to apply for passports this year. Which means there will likely be delays. Our advice: If you need to renew, do it asap. The U.S. Department of State has all the info you need on renewing your passport or in person, or applying if you’re a first timer. They even have a handy checklist of other pre-travel tips.

(Note: This piece refers to United States passports, but the rules still apply.)

Lawmakers will back new USD14 billion payroll support package for airlines

A US House committee will tomorrow consider a plan to award another $14 billion to airlines to pay salaries and safeguard jobs.

Congressional Democrats are set to support more than $50 billion for the transportation sector including airlines.

Current payroll support funding for US airlines is set to expire on 31 March, and the new funding would keep thousands of airline workers on the job through 30 September.

Airlines have been given $40 billion payroll support funding so far since the pandemic began.

The House Financial Services Committee proposal also includes $1 billion for airline contractors.

It will also extend financial support to airports and Amtrak.

Peter DeFazio, chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, recently said a new round of airline PSP money would include existing restrictions on executive pay and stock buybacks.

According to proposal documents seen by Reuters, airlines lost more than $35 billion last year and 'airlines do not expect to return to profitability until midway through 2021.'

Iguazu Falls, on the border of Brazil and Argentina
The Iguazu River winds through national parks of two different countries—upriver in Brazil, park officials speak Portuguese; downriver in Argentina, Spanish. An incredible sight divides the upper stretch of river from the lower and marks the border between the two South American countries: Iguazu Falls plummets over the edge of the Paraná Plateau in some 275 distinct drops, the longest a 269-foot torrent. The falls have been named one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, and it’s not hard to see why.
