Minnie Pearl is famous for her straw hat with the tag sticking out. But did you know the story behind it came from right here in Aiken?
A straw hat adorned with a band of artificial flowers and a dangling price tag was an essential component of country comedian Minnie Pearl's stage persona.

Minnie came to Aiken for a show and realized she had forgotten her hat, so she bought one downtown at a local shop, B.M. Surasky’s. When she was performing that evening, the tag fell out. She played along, and the rest is history.

In 1891, the Englishman Frederick Willcox, his Swedish wife Elise Wellborn, and their two sons, Frederick and Albert, came to Aiken.

The family built a house on the northwest corner of Chesterfield Street and Colleton Avenue and established a catering company in their home. Elise soon became renowned for her preparation of fine foods, and the business was heavily patronized by Aiken's "Winter Colony" families, as well as fabulously wealthy founders and heirs to the fortunes made during the American Industrial Revolution.
