Beynac-et-Cazenac in the Dordogne valley has the extraordinary Chateau de Beynac perched directly on a 150-metre cliff above the river, changing hands multiple times between English and French during the Hundred Years War.

The castle is one of the most dramatically situated in France. Entry to Chateau de Beynac costs around 8 euros.

Those who arrive by canoe from Sarlat and see the extraordinary castle cliff rising 150 metres from the river above them and then climb to the castle and look down at the Dordogne valley describe it as the most dramatically situated and most historically charged castle experience available anywhere in the Perigord Noir.
