🛳️💖Black Women In Travel💖🛳️
Belinda Bennett
Belinda Bennett was born in St.Helena in 1977. At 17 Bennett became a deck cadet on the RMS St Helena and became the second officer before leaving after 9 years. She went on to work on a private charter yacht called the SS Delphine and other ferries while continuing her education to get her Masters. After being turned away and being told it would be hard to find employment as an “ over qualified black woman” she started her career with Windstar Cruises in 2005. In 2016 Bennett became the first black woman to become the captain of a cruise ship when she was named captain of the MSY Wind Star. Bennett was also awarded the Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service in 2018.

💖✨BLACK HISTORY MONTH✨💖
First black owned Travel Agency

Henderson Travel Service was created and owned in 1955 by Freddye Scarborough Henderson and her husband Jacob R. Henderson. Freddye was born and raised in Franklinton, Louisiana, and went to Southern University for her Bachelor’s in Home Economics. She was also the first African American person to earn a degree in Fashion Merchandising from New York University. She married her husband Jacob in Atlanta, Georgia in 1941. Their travel agency was the first fully accredited black owned travel agency in America! Henderson Travel Service planned Martin Luther King Jr’s trip to Oslo to accept his Nobel Peace Prize and was able to accompany him on his trip!
Freddye passed in 2007 after a long battle with a neurological disease.
Very thankful for the path blazed by her and others like her for women like me coming into the travel agency business💖
