Rough Fork Trail

Cataloochee Valley, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina

This is the only foot bridge on the Rough Fork Trail that is still standing after Hurricane Helene. The others have been washed away or damaged. This is the trail that takes you to the Steve Woody House. In its current state, you have to cross the river twice with no bridge.

The wild chickens in Key West, affectionately called "gypsy chickens," are descendants of birds brought by early settlers in the 1800s and Cuban immigrants who kept them for meat, eggs, and cockfighting. When supermarkets eliminated the need to raise livestock and cockfighting was banned in 1986, the birds were released to roam the island freely.

Lake James State Park

“Cowboy Capital”

Love Valley, North Carolina

A unique, Old West-themed town in the Mountains, known as the "Cowboy Capitol," where cars are banned in the town center, and horses are the primary mode of transport.

Founded in 1954 by Andy Barker, it features a saloon, general store, and hitching posts, offering a destination for horseback riding with miles of trails, camping, and events like rodeos.
It was modeled after Old West movie sets, with a blacksmith, and tack shops.
It was founded with a vision for a Christian community, it includes a nondenominational church.
While it has a rich history and a dedicated community, some businesses are closed or run-down, though it remains a popular spot for horse lovers.

Lake Summit, Henderson County, North Carolina

With a surface area of 324 acres, It is the largest lake in Henderson County. In 1920, the Green River was dammed by the Blue Ridge Power Company, (now Duke Energy)to provide power for Henderson County and the Greenville area, creating Lake Summit. Prior to the damming, the land that is now under water, had a small number of family homes and a gristmill; these were demolished or moved as part of the construction process. The land around the lake was parceled up and sold to families. In 1921, a bridge was constructed across the midsection of the lake. In 1983, the state DOT replaced the old truss bridge crossing the river with a new concrete bridge nearby, preserving the old bridge as a (now closed) walking path.

About 250 miles inland. There are four mysterious, unmarked headstones carved with skull and crossbones.

This is the site of North Carolinas most famous “pirate graves”.

According to local folklore, four pirates gave up the high seas to become farmers. Their true identities were eventually discovered, and they were executed for their crimes.
The church initially refused to bury criminals. When they finally allowed the burial, the stones were marked with skull and crossbones as a sign of shame.
