Lore Tripping Takes Over as Falls Strangest Travel Trend
Fewer people seem to be using PTO anymore; they're just doing two-day trips instead. Gen Z's newest obsession is lore-tripping, which is picking towns based on how weird and interesting their history is instead of how nice the hotel is. That’s the lore of it all. I’m talking Mothman statues, old carnival grounds, a whole fake Bavarian village in Washington State.
The numbers back up this trend. Almost all of Gen Z, 90%, say small towns and under-the-radar spots are what they're after this fall, and affordability and feeling like a local are the reasons half of them give. Some towns are actually seeing the effect firsthand. Gen Z travelers are up over 50% in Twentynine Palms, California, 30% in Hot Springs, Arkansas (interesting choice), and 15% in Helen, Georgia.
For sports fans, there’s a sports version of this too, and it's called groundhopping. Instead of picking a destination first, fans are picking the stadium or venue and building the trip around it, for rivalry games or tour stops. Nearly 70% of people say the idea appeals to them, which tracks with this summer's flood of soccer fans crossing North America for matches. Either way, weekend trips are winning, with 60% of people saying they're planning one this fall, more than any other season last year.
