City of Athens, Alabama (Public Relations) has been recognized as the second fastest-growing city in Alabama, according to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau. With a population of 32,587 in 2024, the city saw a growth of 1,641 residents since 2023, marking a 5.3% increase. This places Athens just behind Foley, which led the state with a 12% growth rate, among cities with at least 10,000 residents.
The Limestone County Economic Development Association (LCEDA) attributes this growth to the city’s strategic location, thriving business environment, and quality of place.
“Athens continues to attract families and businesses alike due to its strong community, access to major industries, and proximity to Huntsville,” said Bethany Shockney, President and CEO of LCEDA. “We’re proud to see this growth as a testament to the collaborative efforts between local government, businesses, and residents to make Athens a vibrant place to live and work.”
The U.S. Census Bureau data underscores Athens' consistent growth and shows the city’s contribution to the state’s economic landscape.
Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks reflects on what this progress means for the city and its future.
“This growth is a reflection of our city’s strong economy, excellent quality of life and attractive business environment. It shows that Athens is a great place where people from all over the world want to live, work and play. We have several groups that are committed to ensuring that our growth is sustainable, equitable and beneficial to all members of our community - both old and new. We continue to work tirelessly to provide top notch services and amenities that support the needs of our residents and businesses. Together, we’ll keep building a better and brighter future for Athens.”
Several industries made key investments into the City of Athens in 2024. Cast Products, Inc., an aluminum foundry facility, made a $6.7 million investment and added 14 jobs. Additionally, Intech, a medical device manufacturer, invested $1 million; Morgan Metals, a custom metal fabricator and installer, invested $975,000; and Triad Packaging, who produces corrugated and paper packaging, invested $412,992.
