Mitchell R. Grosky Photography I am a professional photographer who specializes in fine art travel, landscape, and nature photograpy Hi. Welcome to Mitchell R. Grosky Photography!

I am a freelance photographer in a small town in Central Massachusetts. I have been in love with photography and taking photos of people and places since I bought my first film Pentax Super Program SLR back about 30 years ago. Now, nearly all of my photography is Digital, via my Nikon D700, Nikon D90, Canon Rebel T1i, and even my pocketable Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5. In addition, I have owned digita

l cameras from Olympus and Sony, but I would have to say that Nikon is my camera of choice. I use Nikkor lenses generally, my Nikkor VR 18-200 3.5-5.6, my Nikkor 50mm 1. 8, and my Nikkor 16-35 wide angle getting most of my photographic action. My Canon is generally a backup, and I keep a Canon 18-55 zoom on it, but I replace it, for specical occasions, with the image-stabilized ultrasonic 75-300 lens or the 1.8 50mm lens. For developing, I do a great deal of post-processing, using Picassa 2.0 for everyday work, and Nikon Capture NX2 supplemented by Photoshop CS5 , Lightroom, and Photoshop Elements for most of my publishable work. For in-house printing, I generally use either my Canon i9900 or my Canon Pixma iP4600. In addition to being a professional photographer, I am a retired elementary school principal. After spending 37 years in education, I still serve as acting principal--on occasion--at various elementary schools in our district. Aside from my years as an administrator, I was a classroom teacher for 29 years, teaching students in elementary, middle school, and high school. I have always been known for my photos of children in the classroom, and the walls of my schools came alive with nearly a thousand 5×7 and 8×10 photos of children excited by their learning. My wife–who is a recently-retired middle schools special needs teacher–and I love to travel, and over the past 20 years we have cruised to Canada, nearly every island in the Caribbean, Alaska, Mexico, and to 15-20 European destinations. At times we have traveled with my daughter who is also an educator, and my son, who is both working and attending community college. My travels have provided me with the material for nearly 100,000 photos, and hours upon hours of joy. One of my most exciting photographic experiences was a whirlwind 27 day cross-country trip from Boston as far west as Wyoming and Utah and then back. 8000 miles and nearly 9000 photos later, I am hoping to one day find a publisher who is interested in a photography book narrating my experiences. Many of these photos, as well as more recent photos from our Western U.S. trip, are showcased here on my website. Unless otherwise stated, all photographs are copyrighted (c) Mitchell R. Throwback to Antelope Canyon – A Photographer’s Dream & Challenge -- by Mitchell R. Grosky

A few years ago, I had the chance to visit Antelope Canyon, one of the most breathtaking natural wonders in the Southwest. Located near Page, Arizona, this slot canyon was carved over centuries by flash floods and wind, creating surreal, flowing sandstone walls. The narrow passageways and ever-changing light make it one of the most photographed and awe-inspiring places in the world.

What made the experience even more special was having a Native American guide lead us through the canyon. He shared stories about its history, the Navajo traditions tied to the land, and the forces that shaped these stunning formations. Hearing the cultural significance of the canyon gave the visit so much more depth and meaning.

From a photographer’s perspective, this was one of the most challenging shoots I’ve ever done! The combination of low light, dramatic shadows, and sudden bursts of sunlight made exposure and composition a constant battle. Every turn presented a new challenge, but also an opportunity for an incredible shot. Capturing the magic of Antelope Canyon in photos was no easy task—but it was absolutely worth it.

Looking back, it’s still one of the most incredible places I’ve ever explored. If you haven’t been, put it on your bucket list!

I expect that about 18 hours from now, our Athol Uptown Common will look a lot like this photograph which I took in 2018. I took the liberty, in editing the scene, of removing a few telephone poles and wire and making a few other minor cosmetic changes, but it otherwise remains just as lovely as I viewed it then. Athol has so many beautifull scenes which I will be highlighting as this long winter drags on, hoping to display a little beauty to brighten up your facebook feeds as we head towards spring, which is just two months away (or so the calendar says)!

The Arch of Galerius in the Greek City of Thessaloniki
Last July, when my family visited the Greek Isles, one of the ports was Thessaloniki. We did not have a great deal of time to explore, so we decided to take a Hop On, Hop Off bus to see major sites. We passed by the Arch of Galerius really quickly, but I managed to capture this shot out the window of the bus, which I did edit in photoshop. (Best viewed in full size)

The Arch of Galerius, alternatively known as Kamara, is among the most distinctive monuments in Thessaloniki. It is located at the junction of Egnatia and Dimitriou Gounari Street, about 400 meters from Navarino Square. Dated to the early 4th century AD, it is one of the most striking examples of Roman art in the city and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Roman Emperor Galerius ordered the construction of Kamara to celebrate his victory over the Sassanid Persians in 306 AD. It was originally an eight-pillared gateway that formed a triple arch and connected to the Roman palace. The central arched opening was 9,7 m wide and 12,5 m high, and the second openings on the other side were 4,8 m wide and 6,5 m high. Only some parts of the arches remain today and just three of the eight pillars.

The marble sculptural panels on the arch depict various scenes that emphasize the might of the emperor. One pillar shows Galerius attacking the Persians and celebrating the unity of the tetrarchy, as an eagle bearing the victory wreath approaches him. Another showcases the imperial family, including Valeria, the emperor’s wife. Persian soldiers, camels, and elephants are also depicted.

Today, the Arch of Galerius stands as a symbol for Thessaloniki. It is one of the most renowned sights in the city and a popular meeting point for locals and visitors alike. Another highly significant landmark of the time, the Rotonda Monument, lies just 100 meters from the arch. This massive circular structure dominates the area and was once connected to the Arch of Galerius. The ruins of the Palace of Galerius are also found about 300 meters south of the arch.
