Sometimes it isn’t just where you travel that matters. It’s when you go.

🐧 I’D TRAVEL FOR THAT: PENGUINS AROUND THE WORLD

When you picture penguins, do you automatically picture Antarctica?

That’s only part of the story.

You can see Galápagos penguins standing on volcanic rock near the equator, African penguins on the beaches of South Africa, Magellanic penguins throughout Patagonia, little penguins in Australia, rare yellow-eyed penguins in New Zealand—and, of course, thousands of penguins in Antarctica.

Same wildlife obsession. Completely different trips.

🌴 Dreaming of an overwater bungalow—but not the very long flight to Bora Bora?

French Polynesia may be famous for those iconic villas suspended over brilliant blue lagoons, but it’s far from the only place where you can have the experience.

I’ve put together some of my favorite alternatives, including overwater stays in the Caribbean, Mexico, Belize, Panama, Jamaica, Aruba—and, for those willing to travel a little farther, the Maldives.

Some are ultra-luxurious. Some are wonderfully romantic. And several are much easier to reach from the U.S. than Bora Bora.

🎈 I’D TRAVEL FOR THAT: HOT-AIR BALLOONING

There’s something unforgettable about seeing a destination from the basket of a hot-air balloon.

But where would you want to do it?

You could stay closer to home and watch hundreds of balloons fill the sky at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Float above California wine country in Napa Valley. Drift over castles in France’s Loire Valley or the rolling hills of Tuscany.

Or go farther.

✨ I’D TRAVEL FOR THAT: THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

For September, I’m starting a new series about experiences that are worth traveling for. And there are few experiences quite like standing beneath the Aurora Borealis.

The best part? There isn’t just one way—or one place—to do it.

You can stay closer to home and combine Northern Lights viewing with Alaska’s Aurora Winter Train and a winter stay in Fairbanks. Head to Iceland and spend your days exploring glaciers, waterfalls and geothermal landscapes. Venture above the Arctic Circle in Norway, experience Swedish Lapland and the ICEHOTEL, or settle into a glass-roofed cabin in Finnish Lapland and watch the night sky from somewhere warm and cozy.

The Northern Lights may be the reason you start planning the trip, but the destination you choose determines everything else you’ll experience along the way.

🌺 Last but absolutely not least in our week of exceptional U.S. escapes: Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, Waikiki Beach.

No, this isn't one of the ultra-luxury five-star resorts I've been featuring. And I don't care. It belongs on this list.

I've stayed here myself, and I would go back in a second.

Known as the “First Lady of Waikiki,” the Moana Surfrider opened in 1901 and brings something to Waikiki that a newer luxury resort simply can't recreate: history, character and a genuine sense of place. Its grand white façade, sweeping verandas and beautiful interior immediately transport you to another era.

And then there's the location.

You're directly on Waikiki Beach, with Diamond Head in the distance and one of the most recognizable stretches of coastline in Hawaii right outside the door.

🌿 From Hawaii, we’re heading back to Puerto Rico—this time to a resort where the setting is every bit as important as the luxury.

🌺 Hawaii has no shortage of spectacular luxury resorts, but I would be remiss if I didn't include one that truly looks and feels like Hawaii.

Kona Village, a Rosewood Resort isn't trying to transport you to some generic version of tropical luxury. Its sense of place is one of the things that makes it so special.

Located on the Island of Hawaiʻi along the Kona Coast, the resort is designed as a collection of individual hale, inspired by traditional Hawaiian architecture and spread across a landscape of black lava, palm trees and oceanfront lagoons.
