Day 7 – time to leave – well for one of us.
Thanks to insomnia, I was up when Delta sent us a text message advising us our flight was delayed. Three hours later, our flight was cancelled and rebooked for the following day. After strategizing we decided to reroute the one flight so my friend could go home and book a hotel closer to the airport so I can stay that extra day. We all know I am okay with getting stuck in Italy for a few more days. I know our transportation company was over me and my repeated emails on time change. For us to end up taking the transportation anyway. So, listen, the water taxi driver was so mad at a couple that had six…yes six suitcases that they said they paid extra for that he took it out on everybody that had one luggage and one carry-on (that’s what the instructions said to have). He kept telling me I had too many. I said I had what they told me I could bring and paid for. He literally fussed at everybody on the taxi for the entire 30-minute ride to the airport. He was so angry and nobody tipped him. He was telling us off in every language he knew. After a while we all just started laughing and talking to each other.
After making sure my friend was secure at the airport, I took a $20 taxi down the street to the Courtyard Marriott ..less than a mile from the airport but there was so much construction going on, it was best to take a taxi. The concierge at the hotel had my room ready at 9:30 am upon my arrival (being an Ambassador member has its perks). After breakfast, I took a nap with a two-hour time limit. After resting, found a little public park with a few benches surrounding what I think was a school in the neighborhood. After chilling and watching two old friends having a conversation on life, I found myself at the local bar down the street. The taxi drivers come and rest before they go back to the airport to drive. Everyone was nice and cordial. They acknowledged my presence and moved around me like it was normal to see me sitting and watching people. After eating I walked a little farther down the street and basically started picking out my apartment (LOL). Returning to the bar, I ordered a tuna and olive sandwich to go back to the room. It was different but good.
DRATS, it’s time I rest up so I can make my way to the airport to go back home in the morning.

Day 6 – Oh no its almost time to go back to being regular. I am sure we missed something however we were going to find it. Since we were taking a shared water taxi to the airport the next day, we needed to find where we would be boarding since it would be 7:30 in the morning. We walked past where I thought the pier ended, I was so wrong. It was a whole vendor village over there and it put us on the backside of the palazzo. We also found a public water taxi stop to the hotel that was actually closer than the one provided by the hotel – without you having to cross a bridge. There were also restaurants and other hotels back that way. The things you find when you venture outside of your comfort zone will amaze you. Welp, we ventured out. Perfect location with benches in front of the private and public water taxi stands to just sit and people watch as others went about their day.
We tried the ristorante across from the hotel. The food was good, but we had one waiter who came in at the end and snatched the tip we were leaving for the waiter that served us the whole time. Thankfully the manager was not with the foolery and literally patted his pockets to get the other waiters tip back. When I say he did it in front of whoever was looking. I had to laugh. A whole shake down in public.
I have no idea (I do but we will not call her name…LOL) how I ended up on retail high-end shopping row. From the Dior representative handing me a towel that was soaked in white tea to the representative at Balenciaga telling me to stop wasting money by buying shades to lose within a year, we enjoyed all the shops. The concierge in Valentino tried to direct us to the St Regis hotel which has a beautiful courtyard where we could grab something to eat and mingle with the locals. Well, we could not find it that day, but we did see it on our way to the airport the next day. I’ve noticed in Italy, flowers are on majority of the windowsills with vibrating colors. I love to see it. Fresh flowers, not fake ones.
Later that evening we sat out and listened to the small orchestra play again. So relaxing. We were going to grab dinner at this one location in the square but $36 for a burger and fries was not my thing. Let us go back down one of these alleys. We both laughed as we simply left..to the left to the left…LOL. Ended up at another ristorante with good food and drinks.

Day 5 – since we had no schedule, we decided to sleep in and move when we felt like it. After having brunch, we walked around, got some gelato at Sojo gelatos (tiktok find) as I showed my friend my favorite bar in Venice (another tiktok find). Venturing down some areas I had never seen before and will try and find again. Keyword here…try. I will tell everyone that Venice is the place where there is no destination in mind when you go out exploring. You just walk until you find something you like. Around every corner is something new to discover. Just know traveling with me you will get lost. Well, you will get turned around. We ventured into a museum that ended up going through a hospital as we followed the exit signs. Let’s just say my friend wanted to leave me at that hospital. I am blaming google directions because it said turn left…LOL. While wandering around, we found La Brasiliana snack bar. It was a nice little spot hidden away but not really. Perfect location to people watch for those walking and for those riding a gondola or being dropped off by a water taxi. It was the nicest little spot that has shade from the beating sun (yes I forgot I had an umbrella) and the mojito was amazing. My glass had a ball center so your drink never overflowed. The glass rocked in whatever direction. It was so cool.
I like to people watch so we found benches on the side of the Doge palace that faced the square. Being able to relax and listen to music in the early afternoon is a great way to wind down. We didn’t actually wind down we ventured down another alley. Watching the gondola riders cruise along the canals as we walked over bridges, relaxed in random parks (I have to go back and find some of them)
We visited a restaurant that I won't name but I always go to when I am in Venice. This time, the service was subpar, drink was watered down so much my mojito was just a “mo” and I had to keep repeating my food order to the waiter. To say I was disappointed would be putting it lightly. The owners were there celebrating something, but the atmosphere was still not what it has been for the last 5 years. This was not a one time visit to this restaurant this is a yearly visit to mark my visit. Now I must find me another “mark my visit” location in Venice. I have a few more options since we got turned around in the alleys. The location of Hotel Concordia is well placed, and we were in the vicinity of the San Marco square and everything it has to offer. Walking outside was just that…walking outside.

Day 4 – it is time to take the Italo train to Venice San Lucia station. We arrived at the station 30 minutes ahead of time. Asked the concierge for the Italo train directions to make sure we were at the right entrance. She pointed us to the platform after it loaded on the screen with the rest of the trains. You have 15 minutes at most to get onboard. They will leave you so do not play around. Find your car, get on, find your seat and keep it moving. Train ride was good until we were within an hour of arrival and then was delayed for maybe two hours due to mechanical problems. Bathrooms were clean until one guy…there is always one. We were in a tunnel and thus could not get out to board another train. So I slept.. I rested my eyes. Now for future train rides on Italo (the earlier you book your tickets the cheaper they are and you have better seat options) I will book another VIP ticket but bring my own snacks. They provided snacks but yeah, go to the store before boarding your train. The crackers and juice were not it. LOL.
Arriving in Venice at 4pm instead of 1pm but all was good. Water taxi was crowded due to it being a Saturday and the sun was going down. One Italian lady couldn’t mind her business but otherwise we were good. Following directions to the hotel but google was not much help but we found it. Now for future visits, we will take the water taxi to the San Marco Gillian station since it was closer and no need to go across a bridge to get to the hotel. Room was ready and we needed a nap for two hours.
Our hotel was Hotel Concordia. Boutique hotel right off San Marco square. Perfect location to be in the middle of that area. Easy access to the gondolas, shops, water taxi stands, vendors along the walkway of the grand canal. This hotel acknowledged my stay with a letter signed by the general manager. Yes, signed not stamped. My room overlooked the street right in front of the hotel in view of the restaurant directly in front of the hotel. The Doge palace was busy pretty much all day long. We walked alley ways with no destination in mind. Just know if you are following me, we will get lost. I can’t help it.

Day 3 – we are up early to eat breakfast at the hotel. We had a croissant which I thought was regular cream filled when in fact it was white chocolate filled. OMG it was awesome. The juice was a few mixed together but delicious. We walked down around and found a farmacia (pharmacy) to see if they had any skin care products on sale. We happened to visit a vintage shop. A lot of very nice items were in there. As we walked down further, we stopped at this nice little restaurant (cannot remember the name) but it’s down the street from the Mary Major Basilica. We stopped because I saw a lemon flavored icy (DJM, we are in Italy). Mix it with the strawberry flavor and add a shot of tequila, awesome! We had conversations with a nice couple that were visiting from London. We talked about the food from the train station in Rome and what the station in London offered with a bush of laughter. We offered recommendations and we each moved to enjoy the rest of our day.
Since we had taken the bus the day before, we decided to “walk around” and found things were closer than we initially expected. We walked a lot…lol. After walking to the Piazza della Repubblica area, we approached a golf cart guy to ask the cost and how do we book. We negotiated a price for a 2.5 hour tour. We were able to go into some areas where the buses could not venture down. We went to a park (Piazzale Napoleone I) where a young man was playing a Stevie Wonder song on his violin. Even though it was hot the environment was so relaxing. A person could sit and either read or people watch without anyone bothering them. Kids played, adults were curious about the scene that was below regarding the history. Just the picture by itself was just breathtaking from above. We visited Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of four rivers). The whole area was just a vibe. Restaurants were all over and people were hanging out enjoying the food, the music and the energy. We went inside a Chiesa (church) di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola, that is just beautiful. The church was being remodeled. The guide said it happens a few times to make sure to keep up with all changes. The church is famous for a trompe-I’ceil painted dome. Its designed to look three dimensional.

For those that travel to Europe, have you heard of EU261-04? This was the first time my flight was canceled and rebooked for the following day. Google to get correct information. Do not pay a company to do it, go directly to the airline you are flying with. I have insurance but this and delta got me right so I didn't have to file a claim.

Day 2 – Jetlag required we sleep in until noon. Because we were going to take the train in a few days, we wanted to see where we would be boarding. Walking to the train station to look around is a must. Plenty of vendors, places to sit, and helpful people. The food court was amazing for a train station. Food was good and not overpriced. Freshly cut steak was on point, steamed and seasoned artichoke ran a close second. Why artichoke? Great question – there is a story behind how I ended up tasting it. A mother and her two daughters were sitting behind us and me, and my curious George self overheard the one daughter saying she was going to get a steamed artichoke and see how it was. Once she came back, I asked her how was it? With an unused fork she broke off a piece and asked me to try it because she thought it was good. I declined and was peer pressured by the mom to try it. Best decision, because it was seasoned so good and not over cooked. How many strangers you share your food with so you both can have that experience? None that I know of – just being honest.
Across the street from the station, we tried “Chicken hut.” Do not, I repeat do not try it. You will walk away mad unless you want oven fried chicken that is not all the way crispy as the pictures suggest the chicken is. It will put you in the mind of KFC (which there is down the street from the hotel) original chicken just without a good taste. My friend Kim talked about that bad chicken for two days…just know it was her idea. LOL.
We jumped on the hop on hop off double decker bus with tickets we purchased at the hotel. Late afternoon but still very “warm” and busy. Riding the bus was pretty cool. Just sit back and let someone else drive. Do watch out for the tree branches if you sit on the top because the drivers do not see that part. They have earplugs so you can hear the guides providing historical information as you tour Rome. After seeing a supermarket on the outside of the train station, we ventured over to have a look, and to buy some water.

We all know how much I love visiting Italy. Well, this one was a little different than what I normally do and I must say it will be done again in this same order. Because it’s going to be long, I will break it up into a few posts. Let’s get into our itinerary,
Day 1 –
Flew into Rome and used a private vehicle transfer to our hotel. Marcello drove a clean Mercedes. All the private transportation AND uber were Mercedes. All polished and looking ready to work. I was not ready for the comparison to what we consider luxury, and the Italians considered service-related vehicles. We were not ready. Marcello was on time, professional and was exactly where he said he was going to be. The name of the company we use is Mia Limo. They have good reviews on viator and are easy to communicate with.
Our hotel is Hotel Morgana. The pictures do not do it justice. It is literally one block from the train station. Our room was ready as soon as we were checking in our bags, so we were able to go directly to our room. In boutique hotels in Italy, just know if they have an elevator, it is for two people at a time with no luggage. Plenty of mirrors but small.
I know it said it on the views however it was actually one block away. Small block and very walkable area. If you jump at every sound, this is not the hotel for you. Italians are loud. It is also a high populated African and Indian cultured area. The hotel is next to a few good restaurants but the one we visited the most was Ristorante Turati. We meet waiters Manager Gigi (he was the highlight of our day) and Martel (who you could tell hung out with his African neighbors). They made coming back to their restaurant so inviting and easy.
The first restaurant we went to had good food, but we didn’t get a warm and fuzzy reception, just a warm one. It didn’t stand out.
When you finish eating, you walk around to make your food digest better. It does work and my feet were on fire but not actually hurting.
We walked a lot and saw a lot. People were friendly. We met a young couple at the oldest basilica in Rome. They are from a town about two hours south of Rome. They were such a cute couple. They are getting married in September. Of course, I asked them about the Calabria area, and they provided me with a plethora of information about other towns to look at while down there.
