He really said “just go to Vegas if you wanna throw away money” 😂

I’ve never been to Santorini, so I can’t speak from experience… but I’ve heard from many people that, while beautiful, it’s extremely overpriced and overcrowded, and you can easily find the same Greek charm on other islands for lower prices and less crowds.

So, if you’re like me and prefer to skip the crowds and the overpriced stuff, check out these three islands instead:

• Milos:
Known for its breathtaking beaches, this volcanic island is perfect for exploring hidden coves, dramatic coastlines, and crystal-clear waters. Don’t miss a boat trip to the iconic Kleftiko caves!

• Paros:
Charming villages, lively nightlife, and windsurfing paradise! Paros strikes the perfect balance between relaxation and adventure. The traditional Cycladic architecture makes it super Instagrammable too!

• Naxos:
The largest of the Cyclades, Naxos is known for its rich history, delicious local produce (try the cheese!), and incredible hiking. It’s more low-key but full of authentic Greek culture and tradition.

On this trip, we opted to visit these islands and our Greek driver said we made the right choice skipping Santorini! Do you think he was right?

LA TRATTORIA:
- Reservation is a must and if you wanna get a table by the pool (côté piscine), best to book online in advance
- To experience dinner by the lights, it’s best to come a little after sunset, when all the lights are switched on
- Their 24hrs slow braised beef shoulder and pasta dishes were to die for!

LES JARDINS DU LOTUS:
- Perfect hidden garden oasis escape from Marrakech heat, the place is very well air conditioned during the hot weather
- DJ plays some tunes in the evenings if you’re looking for something more lively
- Their cucumber margarita is a must try!

L’MIDA:
- Their rooftop is overlooking Medina and on a clear day you can even see the Atlas Mountains
- Try their spiced tea which is a traditional Moroccan tea with a unique herbal twist
- Fish tajine was really good!

BACHA:
- Go to Dar el Bacha Museum where you can purchase either coffee house ticket or combo ticket for both and explore the beautiful gardens of the museum while you wait
- Typically waiting time can be up to 1-2hrs to enter the coffee house, so it might be worth to come at the opening time 10am (or bring a book with you 😅)
- The head waiter is very knowledgeable and can help you pick the best coffee for your taste and preferences

DAR DAR:
- Booking ahead is necessary to get a spot on the rooftop area and it’s THE SPOT to watch the sunset over Medina
- Cocktails are top tier
- Every sunset is greeted by either live music or DJ

This was the absolute best thing I’ve done in New York (and I lived there 13 years!).

At this restaurant, real grandmothers from every country across the globe are invited and hired as chefs to cook the recipes handed down to them that they cook at home for their families, that make up the fabric of the culture they were born and raised in [from website].

Here’s what you MUST know in order to go:

📅You MUST make a reservation📅

No walk-ins!

💰They are cash only💰

Come prepared — but there are several ATMs in the areas if you forget.

⏰They have limited hours⏰

They ONLY operate Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with seatings at 2:30pm, 5:30pm, and 7:30pm.

⛵How to get there⛵

The restaurant is in Staten Island, which is a long way from Manhattan! You can get there by car/cab (45-90 minutes, depending on location/traffic), or can take the free Staten Island Ferry and walk 7 minutes (uphill!) to the restaurant.

🍝The menu changes🍝

There’s a set menu of classics + a rotating menu from the nonna in residence. We got dishes from Argentina, Japan, and Italy (& an affordable $45 bottle of wine!).

👵You can choose your nonna cuisine👵

The website shares the chef dates 1-2 months in advance. Right now the site has chefs from Sri Lanka, Egypt, Peru, Bangladesh, Greece, Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago, and more.

👩‍🍳They teach classes👩‍🍳

Aspiring chefs can meet the day’s chef 1:1 from 11:30am-2pm and get a free cooking lesson. The goal is to keep their traditions alive and pass techniques and knowledge from one generations and culture to another. ❤️ You can sign up on their website.

🥰You will get hugs🥰

The chefs are known for chatting! Maria, the tiny nonna matriarch with a thick Italian accent, spent seemingly the entire evening having conversations, holding hands, laughing, and giving hugs. It felt like they cared about each of us deeply like our own grandparents 😭😍

1. Always keep your luggage and personal items close to prevent theft.
