✨Day 10, Italy..Siena!

We were up early today for our drive to Siena!

When you travel with Adventures by Disney, they handle all the logistics and you simply show up! I call that ‘Mom’s perfect vacation!’ I was able to simply enjoy every activity but I never had to plan it or manage it! (I do those things for all my clients so for my own trip I wanted to be spoiled in the same way!)

We departed Florence on a motor coach and about 90 minutes later arrived in Siena!

This medical town is known for its extremely hilly streets and Gothic architecture. Our local guide walked us through the streets explaining the cities fascinating history of the 17 ‘contrade’ or neighborhoods for lack of an easier definition, each bearing its own animal emblem. Twice a year in July and August, 10 of the 17 contrade compete in a bare back horse race around the city’s central Piazza del Campo. The Palio, as it is known, dates back to the 17th century and is a source of great pride for the people of Siena!

When you travel with Adventures by Disney you also get access to special tours and experiences! Today that meant the opportunity to be hosted by a member of the Eagle Contrade, see their headquarters, and vist their chapel! We were really able to understand the pride of the people of Siena around this unique tradition! And just weeks later, the Eagle Contrade won the Palio making our experience even more memorable!

We had one more stop on our way back to Florence so check back tomorrow for all the fun….

We had an evening to ourselves and decided to head out to see the BEST sunset in Florence!

We crossed the Arno River at Ponte all Grazie and followed the well marked path up to Piazzale Michelangelo! This beautiful piazza sits on a hill just east of the city and offers stunning views all day but especially beautiful sunsets over Florence!

Planning to visit Florence? You definitely want to add this to your itinerary! Make sure you arrive early because it does get crowded! And no worries if you can’t make the walk! It is accessible by car and bus too!

✨Italy, Day 9 - Florence!

Our first day in Florence started early! After breakfast, we met our guides for a full day walking tour of the city including visits to the Uffizi Gallery Museum and the Accademia Gallery!

Known as the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence was ruled by the powerful Medici Family. As wealthy art patrons, they financially supported great artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli! They also funded incredible architecture throughout the city including churches, palaces and public spaces! The streets of Florence themselves are filled with sculptures in piazzas around the city!

What not to miss in Florence?

*The open air sculpture gallery in Loggia del Lanzi
*Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery

Adventures by Disney filled our day with the perfect mix of Renaissance classics, history and the most amazing lasagna for lunch at a little spot we might have missed on our own!

✨Italy, Day 8 - Pompeii!

This was our last morning in Sorrento but let me tell you how easy it was with Adventures by Disney!

Instead of waking up and hauling our luggage downstairs, we got ready and simply left our bags outside our room then made our way down to breakfast. That was it. Nothing else. When we arrived in Florence later in the day our bags were waiting in our room! Now that is pixie dust!

But first…Pompeii! We had a brilliant guide who filled us in on all the history - much of what you think you know is not the whole story! She led us to key sites and brought the site to life with incredible story telling! I could have walked these streets for hours with her imagining the hustle and bustle of life before Vesuvius erupted entombing the city for history! We would definitely consider returning here to linger a bit longer and visit nearby Herculaneum also destroyed by that fateful eruption!

We said goodbye to Pompeii and the coast of Italy making our way to the train station! Train travel in Italy is extremely efficient and easy! We settled in for our nearly 3 hour train ride to Florence!

✨Italy, Day 7 - Capri!

We started out early to catch the ferry from Sorrento to Capri then boarded the funicular to the top! If you don’t know, Capri is a small island in the bay of Naples offering stunning views with luxury shopping and hotels!

Our day here started with a little pixie dust - delicious granitas! Our guide led us through the main part of town explaining some of the history of the island and then we reached the Gardens of Augustus! From here, you can enjoy sweeping views of the island!

We shopped and enjoyed lunch and this is where I had my first taste of heaven - affogato! A divine combination of coffee and gelato which became my obsession and daily treat!

After lunch, we met back at the port where we boarded a boat for an afternoon on the water! In my opinion, this is the absolute best way to experience Capri! The water is stunningly beautiful and you can spend an entire afternoon exploring grottos! Our boat today was too large to actually go in any grottos but that is on my list for our next visit!

We enjoyed a swim in the Gulf of Naples before heading back to Sorrento for a family fun night!

✨Italy, Day 7 (cont’d) - Pizza Making! 🍕

After a long day on Capri, it was time for some family fun!

We all freshened up and met back to head to Agriturismo Galatea - a small family owned farm in Sorrento!

We learned about the history of olive oil, how to make fresh mozzarella, made our own pizzas, sampled homemade Limoncello and enjoyed a performance of an authentic Tarantella - a traditional Italian folk dance from Southern Italy!

After days of being on the go, the was a fun and relaxing night! This was really also the first time as a group we were able to really to get to know each other! Definitely a highlight of the trip! And the pizza was 🤌!

✨Italy, Day 6 & the first day of our Adventures by Disney Amalfi Coast and Florence!

After fueling up with breakfast at our hotel and loading up on snacks for the day, we board our luxurious motor coaches and headed for the Amalfi Coast!

I was skeptical about the bus transportation used by Adventures by Disney but these are so nice and not overly large! And our seat had a port to charge our phones which was nice and needed by the end of the day! But also I have no desire to driver the narrow and windy roads of the Amalfi Coast nor do I recommend it to my clients! I relaxed and someone else drove!

We hit the two biggest destinations in the area - Positano and Amalfi! Our local guides began with a walking tour to acquaint us with the towns then we had time to explore on our own! Both are picturesque and beautiful!

I think we walked in to almost every church we passed in Italy and so Amalfi was no different! The Cathedral of St. Andrew Apostle is stunningly beautiful! But don’t miss walking underground to the remains of an earlier church.

We left Amalfi and headed by boat to Salerno! Nothing beats seeing the Amalfi Coast from the water as you pass picturesque town after town!

Back in Sorrento dinner was on our own so we headed down to Marina Grande for dinner on the water! This small historic fishing village is a must when you visit Sorrento!

✨Italy, Day 5: A new luxury hotel and the start of a new adventure…

Day five began with a Hotel change to the Grand Hotel La Favorita in Sorrento!

Why did we change hotels? Because today we began our journey with Adventures By Disney to explore the Amalfi Coast & Florence!

Adventures By Disney are curated group trips to incredible destinations full of all the Disney magic and attention to detail that you love!

Our adventure begins in Sorrento and from here we will explore the Amalfi Coast over the next few days. Day, one always begins by meeting your adventure guides and a group dinner to meet your traveling companions. Every Adventure by Disney trip has two adventure guides plus local guides along the way.

This day was also our 20th wedding anniversary so we celebrated with one last rooftop sunset over the bay of Naples!

Every day of the next week with Adventures By Disney was packed and I’m excited to share all the details with you!
