⚠️ A Cruise Story You Never Want to Experience…

You did everything right.

You booked the cruise. Picked out the outfits. Packed your bags.
You brought your birth certificate and ID—because it’s a closed-loop sailing and “that’s allowed.”

👉 A birth certificate + ID can get you on the ship
👉 But it will NOT get you home if something goes wrong abroad

Without a passport:

• You can’t just book a flight home
• You’ll need emergency documentation from a U.S. embassy
• That process takes time (time you don’t have in a crisis)
• And it can get very expensive, very fast

All while you’re already dealing with stress and uncertainty.

This isn’t about rules… it’s about real life.

Emergencies don’t care that your cruise is “closed loop.”
They don’t wait for the right timing.
And they definitely don’t make things easier.

The State Department assigns advisory levels 1-4 for ALL destinations (not just dangerous ones!). The level is assigned based on the risks. The determinations are made based on information from our U.S. embassies and consulates on the ground and the reasons are described in the text of each advisory.

Level 1 – Exercise normal precautions
Level 2 – Exercise increased caution
Level 3 – Reconsider travel
Level 4 – Do NOT travel

Always review the Travel Advisory for your destination at travel.state.gov/destination before traveling.
