I was thrilled to get the chance to visit the remote on Moyo Island in the Flores sea. When I travel, I do site inspections of all the hotels in the area I’m visiting. Crazy to do one from the Aquablu.

This is one of those special places. There are not a ton of these left in the world. Truly remote and peaceful.

What I loved about the Aman:

✨You come here to truly disconnect from the world. And, to take advantage of the incredible marine life that surrounds you.

✨The property has just 17 tents. This was the original glamping. The tents are beautiful with every luxury you might need.

✨Its remoteness is what is so compelling, but it is an extra flight from Bali. We recommend leaving your suitcase in Bali and taking just a smaller day bag for a 3-night stay. Combining this with one of the Amans in either Java or Bali would be perfect.

✨They have a dive center on property. You can get certified to dive here but to optimize your time, best to do that ahead. The team will curate as many dives/snorkels as you would like during your stay.

✨You stay at the resort for all of your meals (which is included in the price).

✨The reef off the resort is stunning! We couldn’t believe how much we saw. But the team will take you out to different dive sites in the area. You can also visit Salah Bay from this resort to visit the whale sharks.

✨Practice of yoga, walks around the island, biking, visit a local village - but really you come here to disconnect from the world.

Sailing on made me appreciate how this is basically a sea safari, each snorkel experience offers new and interesting views into this incredible underwater ecosystem filled with amazing creatures. You never know what you are going to see on each snorkel/dive. And, learning about the animal behavior is fascinating.

Started the day with a drift snorkel along rainbow reef, which is full of soft and hard coral attracting tons of marine life. Here we watched these fish “cleaning stations.” Our guide made the analogy that it is their version of a fish spa. I also learned about the different ambush predators who patiently wait on the sea floor perfectly camouflaged.

At one point I was slowly floating by a coral formation when a sea turtle popped out of the soft corals and swam with me.

We made a stop at the ranger station on Rinca Island in Komodo National Park to learn more about the Komodo dragons. The ranger stations work to protect the species. It’s good for some basic facts but set expectations.

We arrived in the late afternoon to avoid the crowds of day trippers but the dragons are very sedentary and not many are around.

The real magic is waking up early and taking the skiffs around Rinca island. The dragons come out and sun themselves in the morning on the shore. We were so lucky to see 3 dragons. Amazing creatures!

We enjoyed an early morning kayaking session from Aqua Blu. Each morning you can SUP or kayak in the pristine waters without anyone around.

After breakfast, we were situated off the coast of Gili Lawa. We visited the famous dive site known as “the shotgun.” As the tide changes, water is forced through the channel which “fires” you through the channel. So cool!!! Not to mention rays, reef sharks and turtles.

The snorkeling is just like swimming in an aquarium. You are surrounded be hundreds of beautifully colored fish. You can’t believe the diversity. Every color of the rainbow. Every combination. Some blend perfectly with the vibrant color coral and others contrast. More is happening in just one grouping of coral. Whole communities of fish going about their day!

We flew from Bali to Labuan Bajo to meet up with our ship . With just 15 cabins, It has the intimacy of a small vessel combined with the history of a true explorer ship as a former Navy vessel.

Our cruise is taking us through Komodo National Park, a UNESCO heritage site spanning 669 square miles. It comprises three main islands: Komodo, Padar and Rinca along with 26 smaller islands.

Aqua Expeditions is the perfect balance of rugged adventure and refined luxury. The idea is to include lots of adventure: snorkeling, diving, hiking, kayaking and skiff rides. Not to mentions tons of wildlife encounters. All while accessing remote areas with pristine conditions.

The , named best hotel in the world in 2020, is themed around the idea of a 19th-century European explorer’s camp. You feel like you are glamping in a Balinese jungle.

What I loved about it:

✨This is by far the most distinctive hotel. Such a unique experience. Incredible maximalist design.
✨There are just 23 ultra-luxury tents, all with a distinct theme. I was in The “explorers tent”
✨Instead of a standard mini-fridge, you get a vintage leather trunk stocked with complimentary treats and local spirits.

✨The “Officer’s Tent” is the heart of the resort, where we enjoyed afternoon tea and evening cocktails. It’s filled with antiques, books, and a pool table.
✨Every night after dinner, guests can gather around a communal fire pit to roast marshmallows, while silent black-and-white films about Bali.
✨The temple that sits at the base of the resort is just beautiful.

Cool fact:
👉🏻The entire camp was built without cutting down a single tree.

There is no other hotel like this! It’s such a special place.

We LOVED our mixology class at Jimbaran Bay’s . Everything is local! We tasted different araks, Bali’s traditional spirit. Nyepi, the Balinese Hindu New Year, is a remarkable celebration. Instead of fireworks and parties, they observe a day of silence dedicated to self-reflection and spiritual purification.

👉🏻In preparation, local groups spend weeks building massive monster effigies that represent negative energies(greed, anger, envy).
👉🏻On the eve of Nyepi, communities parade the Ogoh-Ogoh through the streets and spin them around at intersections to disorient spirits, all accompanied by Gamelan music.
👉🏻The statues are then burned at the end of the night to symbolize the total destruction of those negative forces.

For 24 hours, the entire island—including the international airport—shuts down completely!!! The island stays dark and silent to trick passing evil spirits into believing Bali is uninhabited, but the deeper purpose is a “reset” that forces personal reflection.
The four rules you follow:
* No fire or light (total darkness).
* No working.
* No traveling or leaving the house.
* No entertainment or self-indulgence.

Such an incredible practice for an entire island.
