[SAVE THIS POST] Let’s talk about the second most visited attraction in the Cusco region (Machu Picchu is #1) - Vinicunca aka Rainbow Mountain. Have you ever wondered why the rainbow? As much as the view is breathtaking the colors of this mountain is a reminder for us to be kinder to our planet 🥺. Global warming is real! It wasn’t until less than a decade ago that it became this colorful. The only consolation is that because of its uniqueness it became a very popular tourist attraction. So as much as I was wowed by this natural phenomenon I didn’t like hearing the reason as to why. Collectively, we gotta do better!
Overall, my experience at Rainbow Mtn. was a mixture of adrenaline, dizziness, fatigue and excitement all in one! I don’t see many people talk about how hard this hike is, or maybe I’m just terribly out of shape 😮💨. I made it to the top and didn’t want to talk to anyone, didn’t wanna look at the camera (pictured), like just let me be. Being up 17,000 ft above sea level felt like death but was it worth it? Absolutely yes! This experience served as a reminder that our bodies can handle so much more than we think. You don’t need no other body 🎶
🌈 Layer up (gloves, hats, everything)
🌈 It is more than likely that you will get light headed and dizzy during the hike.
🌈 Make sure you take time to acclimatize to high altitudes. I would recommend doing this towards the last few days of your trip.
🌈 Don’t try and rush it, take as many breaks as needed.
🌈 Don’t spend more than 30 minutes max once you reach the peak.
🌈 There’s an alternative mountain called Palccoyo. It’s a shorter and easier hike. Not as well known (less crowded) but equally colorful! I plan to go on my next visit.
🌈 Rainbow Mtn is a 3 hour drive from Cusco (a Peru trip requires a lot of early mornings)
🌈 Try to avoid going during wet season which is between December and March.
Happy adventuring besties! 🌈
