Volcano ring. Highland markets. Steam in the clouds. ♨️
Everyone photographs Antigua. Xela is where Guatemala actually lives.
Quetzaltenango — Xela to anyone who lives there — sits at 2,330 m in a valley ringed by volcanoes: Spanish schools on every corner, a market that spills into the streets, and the white colonnade of the Palacio Municipal facing the Parque Central. Base here for the Fuentes Georginas hot springs steaming out of the cloud forest, the crater lake of Laguna de Chicabal, or Volcán Tajumulco, the highest point in Central America at 4,203 m.
Getting there: the shuttle runs Monday to Friday, leaving Antigua at 3:30 AM with pickup at your hotel or hostel in the centre. Three and a half hours in an air-conditioned minibus and you're in Xela in time for breakfast, dropped at your accommodation downtown. US$42 per person — one backpack or suitcase plus a handbag included.
